Hi Sue B, thanks for the note. I have got my hubby home now. He has fatty

liver tissue, and has to call the Dr. for the test results and more tests. He

went in because he had theought he was having a heart attack, which after a day

in the hospital, they decided he had not had one (this is good). But they

found this liver thing. What started all this, he had been taking some quinine

for cramps, and it was labeled wrong so he actually got too much of it, which

put him in a really bad situation. He was so ill and then got dehydrated and

was in the hospital for that, and took another week for it to get out of his

system, then he had the pains in his chest and the rest happened. At least now

we know his heart is in great shape. I still have another 90 emails to go

through, I had planned to delete all, but don't want to miss what is going on,

so I am still at it. Today we took my daughter who is due in October into the

hosp. for a stress test on the baby, because it had been still for quite a

while, which is unusual for him (we think), but turns out the baby is doing

fine and her shower is tomorrow, I am exhausted, but happy things are working

out okay. I have been too tired to look up the fatty liver issue, and I need

to get the tests from the Dr. to see if it is something else or what. Thanks a

bunch and will report back later. Lynn AIH

Hi Lynn

Glad your hubby's heart is ok. I have fatty tissue also, please let me know

what you find out about it.

Quinine for cramps? Never heard of it. Thought it was only for malaria.

What kind of cramps?

Lynn,

does your hubby get enough calcium in his diet or with supplements? Lack of

enough calcium causes leg cramps.

Lynn,

I've pasted some info on fatty liver that might give you some insight. It

mostly addresses fatty liver in the more usual sense, but I've had it show up

in ultrasounds and CT scans since before my AIH diagnosis and I've never been

overweight (before Prednisone) or a heavy drinker. Most of us with AIH seem to

have fatty liver and I think that it's an indication of some degree of liver

damage either in formative stage or already existing. You can have fatty liver

without cirrhosis but I don't know if you can have cirrhosis without fatty

liver. It's a good question to ask the doctor.

Sounds like you've had some stressful things going on recently. I hope your

lives are beginning to feel more normal and safe. Take care of yourself and

that new baby! Who was responsible for the mislabel quinine anyhow? Sounds to

me like some heads need to roll over that one. Quinine is potent stuff. I

hope there was no permanent damage done to your husband directly caused by the

quinine.

Fatty Liver

By J. Worman, M. D.

Some individuals can develop fatty liver. Most people who do not abuse alcohol

and have fatty liver are obese. Fatty liver is called steatosis, and fatty

liver with liver inflammation is called or steatohepatitis. Steatosis and

steatohepatitis can be caused by alcohol and other drugs and an also sometimes

occur in patients with diabetes mellitus. steatohepatitis not caused by alcohol

is sometimes referred to as on-alcoholic steatohepatitis or " NASH. " The factors

that determine who will develop fatty liver are not known. Some mildly obese

and occasional on-obese patients will develop fatty liver while some who are

severely obese will not.

Patients with fatty liver or steatohepatitis usually present to a physician

with unexplained elevations in the serum aminotransferase activities. Serum

alkaline phosphatase and gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase activities are usually

normal. The patient is usually 10% or more above his/her ideal body eight.

The diagnosis is usually suspected after other causes of hepatitis are

excluded. A careful drug and alcohol history should be taken and serological

testing for HBsAg and antibodies against the hepatitis C virus should be

performed. Metabolic diseases should be excluded by a careful family history

and appropriate testing if they are suspected. Serum protein electrophoresis

and testing for autoantibodies should be performed if autoimmune hepatitis is

suspected. Sometimes, patients with fatty liver or steatohepatitis will have

elevated serum triglyceride concentrations, however, this is not always the

case. If a patient has elevations in serum aminotransferase activities for

longer than six months, he/she should have a liver biopsy to make the diagnosis

the fatty liver or steatohepatitis.

Steatohepatitis can progress to cirrhosis. Treatment (diet and exercise) may

stop this progression. Steatosis and steatohepatitis will often improve with

weight loss, preferably to near the patient's ideal body weight. Avoidance of

alcohol and potentially hepatotoxic drugs may also be beneficial.

Hi, cramping in his legs at night. It is a common remedy I guess. But darn

near killed him, because of the mislabeling. Lynn

Thanks Geri for the info. I thought hubby was a gonner for a while, it was

really

scarry and hard to figure out what was going on. Yes thanks everyone, he is

much

better now. He will still have the liver things to go through I guess. We find

out this week. Gosh, I may have a companion for the poop patrol!!! I don't

know

about the labeling, but will check it out. Thanks everyone, Lynn aih

Hi, after investigating the leg cramp thing, we have just about tried

everything. That is when the Dr. came up with the quinine, which works if used

properly. Thanks, Lynn

Lynn,

I'm horrified to see how often serious illness seems to hit multiple members of

one family. It's like something is cockeyed in the overall scheme of things.

You are both so young to have to deal with all of this and you have so many

reasons to need your health right now, especially for your baby and always for

each other.

I can tell you, it's incredibly frightening and depressing when it seems that

the bottom of your world is falling away. We've been through it but we're so

much older, it's part of the logical process of life for people to begin to get

sick. But here's the amazing thing. After the initial shock and fear, you

adapt and I do believe that frame of mind and fundamental optimism about life

and the future make an amazing difference in how well you deal with these

things.

What you need to find out is whether the pharmacy made the mistake in the

labeling or the doctor made a mistake in the dosage or if the quinine was

mislabeled by the manufacturer. I mention this because someone has some

liability here. Your husband could have died because of someone's carelessness

and/or negligence. If it has cost you in added medical expenses and missed

work, that cost should be borne by whoever is responsible for the mistake.

Don't worry, they're insured, but if someone doesn't take them to task for

this kind of negligence, it can happen again to someone else, with even worse

consequences. Something else to consider: Has this caused serious damage to

your husband's liver and perhaps other organs too? Then the liability to the

negligent parties is even higher. Don't assume that because your husband is

better now, you've seen the end of the problem. I would try very hard to get

another opinion from an objective third party. Find out as much as you can

about how this happened, then contact a top level medical malpractice

attorney. (Whatever you do, don't go to one of those hole-in-the-wall

attorneys who get all their clients through the Yellow Pages.)

Bear in mind that whoever is responsible is highly unlikely to admit that they

are responsible for anything and might even try to reassure you that the

problem is now eliminated and there will be no future complications as a

result. Please, until you've talked to an attorney, don't sign any kind of

release or anything else. I don't believe in running to an attorney to sue

someone every time things don't go the way we want them to. However, what has

happened to your husband as you've described it is very serious.

I don't remember the details well, but according to my Mom, during WWII she

somehow got malaria - probably from a mosquito that came into the US with

returning troops. She was deathly ill and they gave her quinine. Instead of

that making her better, she became even more sick and someplace along the line

they gave her sulfa, which almost killed her. Whether it was the quinine or

the sulfa (maybe neither or maybe both) one of her kidneys atrophied and

" died " . Recently a doctor told me that she may have had some kind of

autoimmune disease, but since her kidney problems started shortly after all of

this happened, I'm wondering if the drugs were the culprits. Point being, the

quinine has apparently already caused liver damage, so what about his kidneys?

You really do need to have him see a different doctor.

Hope I'm not saying anything scary. No reason to believe there even is a

problem anymore, but if there is, better to find out now when it's early enough

to do something about it than to find out when it's too late because damage has

been allowed to progress unchecked.

The pharmacy we go to made two serious mistakes within a few months, when they

gave us (me one time, my husband another time) the wrong drugs that, in each

case, could have made us very sick or worse. We stopped going there and we

didn't file a complaint though we probably should have. What worries me is

that if one of those drugs would have killed us, even an autopsy probably

wouldn't have shown that it was due to the wrong medications because that's not

what they would have looked for! Fortunately, we spotted the meds for being

the wrong ones before we took them. If they'd been new drugs to us, we

wouldn't have known the difference.

Take care,

Geri

Thanks Geri, you have given me a place to start looking. Gives me something to

think about too. Sometimes I do get where I think this all is just too much,

but I

have 3 kids and my grandkids to look forward too, so I just keep plugging along.

My husband doesn't know what to think, and all my kids are upset, what a mess.

Thanks again Geri, and I will start tomorrow. Lynn

hubby went to work today and feels a lot better, just tired. Thanks all,

Thanks Luanne, I have one October baby, who is really sweet when she is not 16,

and an October husband! One November Baby and myself and my other daughter is

in

April. So we are a mixed bag. The april baby always felt left out because hers

was so far away, then when it was her time she felt special because she was the

only one! Such are kids! Love em all, thanks a bunch, Lynn aih

Hi Sue B, I sure will, and it will be my second grandchild and probably the

last. The two oldest decided to have only one baby, and my 16 yr old swears

she is not having any! My 16 yr. old, was tested for liver disease about a

year ago and showed absolutely no problems. Found that out for sure

yesterday, and I am very happy about that. My other daughters have to wait

untill they get good insurance before they get tested. Lynn AIH
