This is information from my lab book from nursing: ANA is a protein antibody

that reacts against cellular nuclear material ANA is quite sensitive in

detecting SLE. Positive results occur in apporx. 95 percent with this

disease, however, many other rheumatic diseases and drugs can cause a flase

positive ANA test. ANA, terefore, is not a specif test for SLE.

The test is usually performed by combining the patients serum with nuclear

material derived from a rat'sliver or other such tissue. If positive, the

radiolabeled antihuman antibody should attach to the patients ANA This

fluorescein will then be seen under the ultraviolet microscope. The patients

serum is serially diluted, and the ANA test is carried out with each

dilution. The most dilute serum in which ANA is detected is called the

titer. The test is considered positive if ANA is found in a titer with a

dilution of greater than 1:32. So 1:80 is 2 dilutions, 1:160 is 3 dilutions,

1:320 is 4 dilutions etc... that's my understanding.

I hope this helps!

Geri,

What are the symptoms of Sjogrens besides dry mouth and dry eyes. I have

problems with those things all the time.

Susie,

The ANA thing continues to confuse. What do the dilutions accomplish? Oh

well, I guess I have to conclude I have AIH and since I don't have any

dramatic Lupus symptoms, if it's lurking there, obviously it's not a major

problem. I actually had the recent tests to see if they could identify

Sjogren's. Apparently ANA would have shown that. Even if I have

Sjogren's, it's not so severe I can't handle it though I hate it when I

wake up with my mouth feeling like the Sahara Desert.

Thanks Jody, for the Sjogren's link.

I guess Sjogren's is rarely harmful but it isn't pleasant. In serious

cases it can cause major dental problems. I need to find out more about it.

,

The only symptoms I've ever noticed have been exceptionally dry mouth,

worst when I first wake up. I mean REALLY dry, so my tongue sticks to the

roof of my mouth. Lately, my tongue feels a little swollen, but it's not a

major problem. I also have very dry eyes and had to stop wearing contact

lenses because of lack of natural tears. From what I've read, Sjogren's

isn't an unusual condition in people who have other autoimmune diseases and

I don't think they can do much about it except relieve the actual symptoms.

I keep peppermints around to stimulate saliva. I'm going to check the

website for Sjogren's to see if there are other suggestions.
