I haven't been here personally, but a friend recommended this Bolivian

restaurant in North Beach. http://penapachamama.com/

They have everything from organic raw-living entrees and desserts to

grass-fed beef. They also have entertainment 5 nights/week and you can do

the show and a three-course dinner for $39.95.

My department goes out to dinner once in a while and this is going to be our

next stop. I'll let you know how it is, unless you go first!

I just spent two nights in SF and have come to a few conclusions. 1. If you Google gluten-free food in San Francisco, you get a plethora of articles complaining about the lack of GF food in San Francisco.

2. Yelp has about the only pertinent information regarding GF options for the city.3. Ziadin seemed to be the biggest suggestion. Yet, for some reason, I couldn't bring myself to make the trek over there. I was in the Sunset district and it was in the Castro.. I got hungry at 8:45pm. I didn't plan to stay the extra night. I basically was looking for something open a little later than 10pm. Ziadin closes at 10. I know, my fault. I didn't plan for the extra night. Tsk!

4. Safeway in Fairfield, CA has a much better selection of GF food than the one on Taraval in SF.5. Diet Pepsi is about as hard to find as gluten-free options.6. San Francisco reminds me of Hollywood. Expensive. A Challenge. Definitely could use a little improvement for the Celiac community. Okay, a lot of improvement. Especially for such a food mecca... Even Salt Lake City, UT offered a completely gluten-free store... Maybe that was prep for the Olympics?

I did meet a San Francisco couple at the Whole Foods in Walnut Creek. They mentioned there was an Outback on Serramonte.. Anyone been to that Outback? On Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 9:51 PM, seamaiden399 <seamaiden399@...> wrote:

Hey, has anyone had a good experiences with any vegetarian restaurants

in San Francisco? I haven't really tried, but this weekend I had yummy

vegan food in Eugene, Oregon and I realized how much I missed that

kind of cuisine. I know it can often be better for us because the

chefs are used to " alternative " dining. Any recommendations?

There's a few good choices. We love Memphis Minnie's BBQ, on Haight, I think.

McCormick & Kuleto's can do a great GF meal - for a price! You can get an ice

cream sundae at Ghiardelli's - they've got an allergen list available.

We used to eat the two Chevy's restaurants (Moscone Center, Stonestown) but

don't since the company re-org and menu changes.

I thought that they told me at Memphis Minnie's (which is in lower Haight) that their sauce is not gluten free... either b/c of soy sauce in their recipe or some other ingredient. Maureen, are you very sensitive to gluten? I usually eat at the Burger joint or International cafe along that stretch of Haight Street. A burger or chicken sandwich may not sound too fun without the bun, but they have really good gf fries and it's a pretty good meal for 9 bucks. At International cafe they usually have a gf soup that's " home made " and it's usually something different (occasionally no gf option) and they hook me up with a side of fruit instead of the bread, which is a deal because I think it's more expensive than bread. The white bean sausage is a great one.

For vegan food and smoothies, Ital in Berkeley is fantastic. they are right by Ashby bart, and the building used to be Taste of Africa (on Adelaine, the south side of Ashby). The house dressing has soy sauce so I get my side salad w/o dressing and I always order the stew which is awesome! Now they have two chefs that make it different too, so that's great for some variety... one of them uses some Guyana flavor. I also order plantains sometimes that come with a nice spicy sauce.

Yes--Green's in San Francisco. It's a lovely restaurant that's been around

since the 70s, right on the waterfront in Fort Mason. And the waiters/chefs

know all about gluten free dining.

in SF

P.S. I completely agree with you about the surprising lack of gf restaurants in

the Bay Area, particularly SF. It makes no sense to me either.
