Guest guest
Hi Andy, Here are my facts: Dr. Albert - My original Harrington rod surgeon 1976 San , Texas Dr. is alive and still in San , and is near retirement apparently...he is no longer performing surgery of any kind. I have not had any revision surgery, although I have had surgery for a herniated disk (same one each time...L/5 - S/1) by Dr. Hilton in San - Oct. 2004 and Jan. 2006. Dr. Hilton did a great job of getting me from a deformed, horizontal position to a standing one again each time...although he doesn't seem to know much about center-of-balance issues related to H-rods. ~Carolyn In a message dated 6/20/06 8:29:13 P.M. Guest guest
Hi Andy, I had my Harrington Rod surgery in March 1973 by Dr. Gillespie at the Toronto's Sick Children's Hospital in Ontario. I recently found out that he moved to the States and died there (I don't know exactly when). He was one of the few that had his patients walking 2 weeks after surgery by using a Milwaukee neckpiece on the cast for the next 3 months before putting them in a brace (sorry I don't know the name of the brace but it had a plastic back with a canvas front that went from under the arms to the hips). I was 15 when I had my surgery though I started treatment at age 9, with a body cast for 8 months (that was changed every 6-8 weeks) and then a Milwaukee brace until surgery (23 hours/7days a week). Hope this is the type of information you want. Llweyn From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of afstanton1Sent: June 20, 2006 6:25 PM Subject: [ ] To All - Who performed your first fusion and when? Guest guest
Hi Andy, My original surgery was with Dr DeVanney, Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester NY in 1972. You will find a database, (which by the way I encourage you and every member to fill out!)at the main site. It contains most of this info from those that have taken a few minutes to fill it out. Good luck with the book. Cam
Guest guest
Hi, Andy. My HR surgery was performed by a trio of residents, under the direction of a Dr. Fisher, at Shriners Hospital (at the time called "Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children[!]). I never knew Fisher's first name, but the residents were Leon Kreuger, Rossi, and DeWeese. I recently happened on the information that Dr. DeWeese (my favorite of the 3) is on the staff at Shriners. It was very interesting reading his bio, and seeing his age progression photo! (It had never occurred to me to consider, for instance, that he was a Viet Nam vet.) He is not currently specializing in spine surgery, but back then it seems orthopedic surgery was the specialty, and docs did hips, legs, spines, whatever! I probably should drop him a line some time. I haven't made a big effort (nothing beyond Google), but I have no idea where Kreuger and Rossi are. Fisher seemed fairly old at the time, so I'm not surprised that I didn't find him. I know he was very involved in the planning of my surgery, but as far as I know he was not in the OR with the residents. Aside for the obvious issue that I developed flatback, I must say they did a meticulous job, and the fusion has held up very well. One more digression. I was in the hospital for Thanksgiving, and all the kids were taken to the school room for a traditional dinner. Dr. Rossi carved the turkey! :^P Sharon [ ] To All - Who performed your first fusion and when? Guest guest
I have tried to figure out for years how I missed this " Harrington Rod " business. I had my surgery done in 1965 in Cleveland, Ohio at the Cleveland Clinic. But I have rough scars on both of my hips due to them grafting bones from my hips to my spine. No rod. I'm told that they used my own bones for the grafting instead. I don't know if that is unusual or rare or more important.....why. I would be interested in knowing how many people let you know that they too had serious surgery (I was in surgery twice within a few weeks -- approx 5 hours for each fusion left hip first, right hip second.) but no rod. I recently contacted Cleveland Clinic and ordered copies of my medical records just so I had them. No real reason. I just thought that before they disappear for good, I would like to have copies. The surgeon who perfomed both operations was named Dr. Kendrick, I believe. I seem to remember that he was older then......I was 16 and I remember thinking of him as a grandfather type....and so kind. He may be around but I would doubt if he is practicing. I could contact Cleveland Clinic if that became important to you. Just let me know. Best of luck with your research. Carol Caprarola

My Revision, 12/97, Dr. Boachie, Hosp. For Special Surgery, NYC My son: first surgery, Harrington Rod, 5/1981 at age 15, Dr. Keim. So far, so good for my son. Minimal complaints, no more than a non-scoli person, active lifestyle has not seen a doc for his back since his last visit with Dr. Keim, probably around 1984ish. Good luck with the book. I had surgery in 1966 and 67, without hardware, for an S curve, and they also took bone from my hip (but no scars on my skin) They went in the back, unlike the way they do it now. I had pain after my son was born in 1982, and my new doctor recommended the Harrington Rod. Since I had just had 6 mos. in bed to have my son, and a C-section, I told him not now! So I escaped that, but then had more surgeries to put in hardware, since the fusions do not hold (they didn't fuse all the way down, and the vertebrae that weren't fused continued the Scoliosis. (In the old days, they told us this wouldn't happen--they thought as soon as you went through Puberty, the curves would stop.) My original Doctor, Dr. R. Kirklin , had studied under Dr. Risser, the top guy for Scoliosis in those days. But he told my parents I would never have a day of pain in my life after the surgery. Hah! I still have lower pain after 4 more operations! The " bone glue " that they have now really works now. And you don't have to have the awful, full-body plaster casts that killed our social lives in those days! I hear young people complain about the braces they have now. I wore one after the ops in 2000 and 2001, they were a piece of cake compared to those awful casts! in Oakland

Guest guest
Andy and group; Original Fusion October 1998, age 13, 3 HR. Dr. Eugene Bleck did the surgery at San Mateo, CA. I was the 2nd or 3rd fusion he performed. In 1974 Dr. Bleck, then at Stanford, took out the long HR because I had a loose screw - true story. I still have the HR hardware and bring it out for show-and-tell on occasion to watch the reactions. After 37 years I'm still pleased with his work. Dr. Bleck retired from Stanford. He is now 83 and living in Northern CA. I just received a nice note from him after tracking him down on the net. All my current tests made me curious to see if he was still with us and he is. And for those who wondered - I called my primary care doctor and SHE is sending me a copy of my CT transcript and she told me how to get the films if I want them.
