Guest guest
While visiting a relative in Florida, I came across Sami's bakery items at a health food store. These really are excellent - millet and flax bread, hamburger and hotdog buns, spinach/garlic lavash, and pita chips. They do not have a gluten free facility, but clean everything down, so if you are very sensitive, this will not work for you. For the past several years I have been ordering from them to ship out to California and put items in the freezer (better that way anyhow). They now have online ordering at http://www.samisbakery.com/ - the only problem is they send out 3 day delivery (you have to order so that they get the order by monday or tuesday early am their time, because these items have no preservatives - ingredients for loaf bread: Organic Millet Flour, Brown Rice Flour, Water, Aluminum Free Baking Powder, Sea Salt, Organic Grounded Flax Seed), and the cost of ordering is about the same as the order (my order is usually about $30 and the postage is about $25). However, this is worth it to me to have something that tastes like bread, plus has the added health benefits of flaxseeds, etc. If you click on each item it has the ingredients and nutritional info - http://www.samisbakery.com/pd_specs2.asp?p_id=13. When I was first diagnosed, I was advised to avoid all grains except millet and buckwheat, and that has worked out well for me. I was thrilled to find this very tasty millet/flax bread - it acts like bread, you can toast it, etc. (Also, for the record, I have no connections at all with this bakery.) Guest guest
I thought that the Sami's products were found to have very high levels of gluten when they were tested by independent labs. Sami's used spelt even though it is not in the label. Perhaps that is why they are more like wheat breads. I found this on another celiac site and have been aware of this for a couple of years. I couldn't search back far enough to find the original post with the references to the testing lab and the results but did find confirmation that I was remembering it right. I would not eat it personally."It's not a CC issue with Sami's. They were tested a few years ago by an independent lab and it was found that spelt was the #1 ingredient in the bread."Maia
