Bob's Red Mill, in supermarkets, produces GF steel-cut oats. In the autumn the line is to incude GF rolled oats. Read the label, make sure you're getting the GF Bob's oats; they also have many versions of non-GF oats.

Virtually ALL of the oats raised in the US are

cross-contaminated with wheat, due to current farming practices. There

are only two companies you can obtain GF oats from (via internet).

SO, unless the Cinna Bunnies say

GLUTEN-FREE whole oat flour, then yes, that would be a no.

*Side

note* 20% of the celiac population cannot tolerate even GF oats, and

have a celiac-like reaction to

them, so a lot of celiacs, myself included, just don’t think it’s worth

the risk to even try the GF kind. My reaction is so devastating when I

get glutened that I don’t even want to chance it at all.

Subject: [ ] Oats

question

Hi all,

I'm fairly new to this group, it's been nice reading everyone's posts.

My two year old cannot do gluten, but since he's only two, it's hard to

know whether or not he has a reaction.

My question: What's up with Oats? I know they used to be on the

" no " list, and now are OK, or maybe?

My husband bought a cereal today, Annie's Cinna Bunnies.

Ingredients:

corn flour, evap cane juice, whole oat flour, rice flour...and natural

flavor. Would that be a no?

Thanks!

Kristy

Hi, Bob's Red Mill is already shipping GF Steel Cut Oats, I've seen them readily available at Molly Stone's in Palo Alto and Belmont.

Yes; CalMart sometimes has Bob's Red Mill GF Steel Cut Oats.

Their GF Rolled Oats don't seem to be out yet. I look forward to having them for fruit crumbles.

I bought Bob's Red Mill GF Rolled Oats at Rainbow here in SF at least

2 months ago, so I believe these are already available. They did have

a supply shortage in the spring where neither variety of GF oats was

on the shelf for a couple of months, and the stock person said it was

a shortage back at Bob's. Anyhow, I have enjoyed many an oatmeal

breakfast and oatmeal cookie since then!!

Thanks everyone for your responses on oats! They were really helpful. It's hard not knowing what my son reacts to since he can't really tell me yet. Something I'm finding difficult is when we are out at a cafe or birthday party and his brother can eat whatever, and he can't. But at least he'll be healthier this way. I'm learning to carry around GF goodies in my bag just in case. And leave them at school for birthday parties.

Speaking of parties, we recently discovered Namaste Food brand. We love their Spice Cake mix, we make them into cupcakes. They are free of gluten, wheat, soy, nuts, potato, corn, dairy, and casein. I called them to thank them for not including soy since we are also trying to avoid that, and they were very friendly. We got this at Whole foods in Petaluma and San .

As for Bob's oats, anyone know where to get them in Marin?

Thanks!

Kristy

Here is an article about the study that was the turning point in the

attitude towards oats. http://www.csaceliacs.org/library/useofoats.php

One of the things that it mentions is that children under 8 may be

more sensitive to oats than those who are older.

Here is the timeline of research on the oats issue:

http://www.csaceliacs.org/InfoonOats.php

I don't have a recognizable reaction from GF oats, but I limit my

intake just in case, as some of the people in the studies had " silent "

reactions to oats, where there was intestinal damage but no noticeable

side effects. I have been following this issue for the past few years,

and there has been a large surge towards saying oats are ok, but as

far as I can see, there is no difinitive answer. You may want to wait

until he is older to try adding them into his diet, just to be safe.

Have you tried enjoy life products? They are free of everything, and

their little cookies are delicious.
