Guest guest
DC is great for gluten-free. Try Jaleo for tapas. http://www.jaleo.com/downtown.htm Last time I was there, in April, they had gluten free items marked on the menu. It was the best food I had had in a long time. I even had grilled squid in a tasty inky sauce. They are in the Chinatown area which is downtown on the red line near the Mall. I think they call it Penn Quarter. Austin Grill is great too. It's one of the more affordable options. They actually have a gluten free menu and very tasty tacos. http://www.austingrill.com/austingrillee/index.php?/austin_grill_location/location/the_lansburgh Zaytinya is a trendy, popular and tasty restaurant that has a lot of naturally gluten-free items. I dont rememebr if they had a gluten free menu or if they just had a list of items on their menu that are safe. The staff were quite knowledgeable. I had a great dinner there. http://www.zaytinya.com/ If you have a lot of money to spend, try Oceanaire restaurant. I went there for a business lunch and was blown away by the food and the attentiveness and knowledge of the staff. This is the reason I won't go to Legal Seafoods in DC. They even made broccoli taste delicious - with no sauce. Everything was perfect. I don't remember the name of the fish I got but it was fresh and recomended - and flown in from Alaska. They do not have a gluten-free menu but can easily prepare items that are safe for you and to your request. Apologies for the music on the website. http://www.theoceanaire.com/Location/Default.aspx?id=2 There are also the old stand-bys of PF Changs and Legal Seafood - although I don't recomend Legal's in DC. Last time I was at the Legal Sea Food in DC my fish was dry, the broccoli was overcooked and the rice was dry. It is much better in boston. Guest guest
Hi – I just wanted to thank-you for the list of places you gave me! I made it to Jaleo and Zaytinya. They were both in walking distance from my hotel (8 and 12 blocks respectively) and I had a great experience at both. They each had separate GF menus and the food was good. I preferred Zaytinya over the 2. The only problem I ran into was during traveling. I had brought a sandwich (brown rice bread with a frozen Sunshine burger and slice of yogurt cheese) to be heated up on my layover and not one place in the terminal would heat it up for me due to health code violations. Thankfully the wonderful flight attendants on US Airways put it in a piece of foil and heated it up in the ovens for me (both on the way there and back)…and I also had a few snacks to hold me over on during the 8 hours of travel time. Just thought I’d share. Thanks again! From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Sent: Sunday, October 12, 2008 10:56 PM Subject: Re: [ ] GF in DC DC is great for gluten-free. Guest guest
Hi , I'm glad you had good experiences eating in DC! I really miss those two restaurants. Travelling on planes is always a bit difficult. I've resigned myself to eating snacks and room-temperature food on domestic flights. TSA once threw out my blue ice to keep my ham or tuna sandwich cold. Now, I figure that the meat won't go bad in the few hours until I eat it. And I avoid layovers. - ----- Original Message ----From: Wallace <AWallace@...> Sent: Monday, October 20, 2008 10:52:19 AMSubject: RE: [ ] GF in DC Hi – I just wanted to thank-you for the list of places you gave me!
