Guest guest
We've had a 504 plan for my teenage daughter since middle school; but it's only for unquestioned bathroom access. I would discourage use of the 504 for a GF lunch. Think of the tidal wave of other requests it would open up; not that I don't empathize with your situation. Involving your child in making her own lunches in the morning or the night before encourages (indeed demands) that he/she bear some responsibility for her celiac disease. I believe that pursuing the GF 504 would harm your family's position with the school and the parent board, frankly. Think of the time and money it would take to provide an uncontaminated area with GF procedures. While it might be easier for you to have the school do lunch, ultimately I believe a better example is set for your child when he/she is fully involved in food prep. For what it's worth... -------------- Original message -------------- From: "Lillyth Denaghy Keogh-Quillan" <lillythdenaghykeogh@...> Has anyone here used a 504 plan to induce (force) their child’s school to provide (free of charge) a GF lunch for their child? If so, would you be willing to share how that went for you?
Guest guest
Yeah, but I also know he’s not the only kid with allergies. They legally have to provide a peanut-free lunch environment if we request it. Of course, (and isn’t this *always* the major reaction to a celic) it’s not like he’ll DIE if he gets some gluten. On the other hand, we’re not in an income bracket where we qualify for free lunch anyway, so I don’t know if that would be something that would be a factor or not. He’s very responsible for it (for an eight year old), but I was just hoping to alleviate some of the “I can’t eat ANYTHING that anyone else can” from his life… From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of melbatavia@...
