Dennis,

Our son, , age 16 has issues with dizziness. It is far greater when he is fatigued. He has actually rolled over while bending over to tie his shoes and stumbled while walking. His ENT has exercises he prescribed to get his equilibrium back in order.

Check with your doctor, it can get better.

Dennis:

I've been lucky, I haven't had any " dizzy " spells, but I have had some bouts of

" unsteadiness " and " wooziness " (spelling?). My ENT said he was surprised I

didn't have any bouts of dizziness. In a layman's opinion, it does seem that

you have all the symptoms of c-toma, but I wouldn't jump to any conclusions

until you get your cat scan results. I think major dizzy spells could also be a

symptom of Meniere's Disease, but again, don't take my opinion as a medical one.

I would keep reading anything you can find out about cholesteatoma, but try not

to jump to conclusions. The cat-scan and a surgeon's opinion will let you know

pretty much for sure.

Hang in there and keep us posted........Good Luck

Hi Dennis,

Dizzy spells have not been much of a problem for me, thank goodness! However, since joining this group in 2001 I've read comments from lots of people who experience some degree of dizziness during their struggle with c-toma. Some people are dizzy before surgery and better after. Some people are not dizzy before surgery, but are after. If you have time, go back and look at the old messages - look for some reference to dizziness in the subject line. (wouldn't it be great if we could sort the messages by subject??)

Hope you feel better soon,

Hi Dennis, I never had dizziness before my surgery, but afterwards I

couldn't stop spinning for 1 1/2 months! I couldn't drive or walk in

a straight line (I'm sure people just thought I was drunk all the

time). Just when I thought it would never go away, it started

getting better. Now I'm 2 1/2 months after surgery and only feel a

little off-balance in certain situations (looking around while

walking, etc.). It's amazing how much you take your balance for

granted until it's gone, huh? My ENT gave me exercises to do, but

I'm not convinced they really helped me. I think time was the

crucial factor for me.... Good luck, and hang in there...I hope

you're feeling better soon.

Well howdy Val!

Of course I remember you and I know others do as well...after all the

laughs you gave us several years ago when we held " on-line chats " !

I am sorry to hear that your downhill slide has brought you to

the " brink " ...but I completely understand your wanting to put this

all aside as long as possible. There seems to be consensus amongst

most of us that there is little point in going ahead with the surgery

until your are " ready " in your head. Many of us say we just knew when

the time was upon them. It is some kind of nexus between pain,

function, quality of life and family/caregiver timing....and I think

it is very different for each of us. But once you KNOW...you KNOW.

I hope your evaluation is good an thorough in June. I will put it on

our calendar and you must promise not to drop off the face of the

earth again and tell us what is said, and what your decision is.

As to timing the surgery, other than a planned vacation I would also

consider things like whether the surgeon will be in town for the

period following surgery, how the timing will effect employment or

any insurance changes that might be pending for the new year...also

think about deductible limits for the calendar year. If fall in New

England is typical then you probably would be able to do a lot of

your post-op walking outside before the snow flies.

Having a longer lead time can give an opportunity to improve your

cardio/physical conditioning with the hope of helping your post op

self recover. The down side of a long lead up to a big surgery like

this is that you have to be prepared to have a bit of a cloud over

you for a long while....it will loom large in your mind in most

everything you do...but perhaps you already have that anyway and are

okay with it. In any event....lots of surgeons have their surgical

calendars fairly full in the summer with younger kids hoping to avoid

missing too much school..so it may be that you haven't got too much

of a choice since you wont even begin having a converstaion until

June.

In the end...I know you will get it right for you. And we will all be

here helping you go through this crazy time.

Glad to hear from you!

Take Care, Cam

p.s. What would be the odds of 2 Vals in the Bostin area having scoli

revision with the same surgeon? We will have to keep on our toes!

Dear ,

Welcome back! Many of us get to the decision to "DO" something in a round about way, but Karma and this scoliosis group gal sure played a part in yours, glad the stars alingned for you. I was the type of gal after years of dealing with the pain and disability, if I could find a doc that KNEW what was going on, I couldn't wait to get the surgery done, couldn't be fast enough for me. Maybe I was a bit blessed with being fed up, and everyone has to get to the point where the fear of the surgery couldn't be any worse than what going on. Yours is the perfect story of how things just fell into place. Please stick around and let us know what Glazer has to say! Holding good thoughts for you and support, it's a big step! Your girls trip sounds fabulous, good to have something to look forward to in the run up to surgery. It sure is funny how names amoung us sure repeat, I've always been surprised there wasn't a million 's, as when I was in Elementary school, we had five of us in one class, I was McIntyre at the time, and there was two McIntyre's, crazy hunh.

Glad to hear from you again, welcome back, and we look forward to hearing what Glazer says and your plans for the future!

[ ] Me AGAIN!

Hi Cam!It's from RI! I'm back. For others who don't know me or remember me, I have been part of the forum off and on for a long time. I have stayed away so long because I wasn't "emotionally" ready to continuously deal with my Flatback. However.......as we all anticipate, I'm gone "downhill", so to speak. I have been expereiencing problems, more discomfort and qualityof life vs. downright pain, but I think it is time for me to re-evaluate the situation. A lovely woman here in very small hometown in RI started a Scoliosis Chapter about 2 years ago and she finally gave up inviting me because I always declined her invitation. (Only because I had made a previous commitment on the same monthly date, NOT because I was that deep in denial! :))Interestingly enough, I hardly ever read our newspaper, but one morning a few weeks ago, I did. And lo and behold, there was an article about her and in it she mentioned that my surgeon of choice, Dr. A. Glazer, was going to be at the meeting. Since it has been nagging me to make an appointment for another evaluation, I thought it was karma! So, I went to the meeting this past Thursday and knew in my heart and in my head that the surgery is something I am ready to go ahead with. So I called Dr. Glazer's office first thing on Friday morning to set up an appointmetn and I am going on Thursday, June 6 to Beth Israel in Boston. If he does indeed suggest that surgery is appropriate, I am commited and ready to go ahead and pick the date. I am leaning towards the middle of October as I have a "girls" vacation with my best friend from high school and her sister and friends to go to Aruba. So I am tempted to not cancel this very much needed vacation and just use the next several months to prepare for the surgery, go on the vacation and then come home and have the operation. Anyway, I just wanted to "re-aquaint" myself, touch base with everyone again and reach out to the people that I know will support me in a way no other could even begin to try. I am SCARED to death at the whole prospect, but yet in many ways and very mentally prepared at the same time. So, hello to all -- hoping someone remembers me ;) D. from RIPS -- C from MA, by chance, were you in RI at the meeting I am refering to? The woman who runs it had told me that there was going to be a woman there who was approx. 8-12 months post-revision there (by Glazer) and I noted that during the meeting, she refered to a woman in the back of the room as "Val" several times. Seeing that "" isn't that common of a name (except on this forum!!!), I was just wondering if that might have been you???

Hi Cam!!

Thank you for the warm welcome back! And from you too ! It is

like coming " home " again. I am going through a difficult time in my

home life as well, yet everything is coming full circle here and the

immediate support and welcoming is very much appreciated! Yes, Cam - I

screwed up! I can't even get the first appointment down right, it is

Thursday, June 5!!! Duh! Already, I'm not thinking clearly!!!

Thanks for the open arms,

D. (I WILL TRY to remember to sign like that so there is no

confusion in the future - because I AM going to be a frequent poster!)

HI ,

It is C...the world is too small. No, unfortunately, I was

not at that meeting but I did see Glazer last week for my 2 year

follow-up as he too did my surgery. We did discuss the meeting in RI

and we talked about how Boston would benifit from a chapter. We also

discussed the mentor program this website uses. You are definetely,

beyond a doubt, in good hands in my opinion. If you would like to

chat about it, let me know. ,....funny if there was another

val there at the meeting..that would be 3 of us.

Hi to you too!

When I go to the meeting next month, I will ask about the

other " " that was there! How many " " 's with FlatBack

can there be?? Ha! Ha! I would LOVE to chat with you sometime -

however, I think I will wait until after my appointment with Dr.

Glazer on June 5. I'm sure I will have a lot of questions for you.

And I noticed that we are the SAME age too!! Are there two of me? So

funny! One quick question I do have for you - how long were you in

the hospital and how was the drive home?

Hi ,

I was in the hospital for six days and the ride home was

uncomfortable at best. As long as you have a pillow under your butt

and one behind you, it should be ok. It helps to have a handle to

pull up on too. I look forward to hearing from you in June.

Hi again, !

Yes, it was quite an ordeal. 3 operations and 6 weeks in hospital and

rehab. Tuesday it will be 20 months, and yes, I'm extremely glad it is

behind me!

Sounds like it won't be too long before you'll have yours behind you.

That's so funny, that you ended up choosing the same surgeon as

. Did you consult Dr. Rand, or are you one of us one-doc-gals? I

meant to get a second opinion from Glazer, but was so comfortable with

Dr. Rand I didn't feel like driving into the city one additional time.

Just call me a bad example for the newbies!

Take care, and I know you'll keep us updated.
