I'm wondering what you could have been glutened by at Cafe Gratitude, since they don't use gluten containing products in anything, except for the beer served and the wheat grass they only put in certain of their juices (and some sources say wheat grass doesn't contain gluten since gluten is found in the seeds, which typically aren't present on the grasses themselves...). Because I'm not sure what to make of wheat grass, I just remind them to wash their hands after handling the w.g. and before touching anything of mine. Perhaps you had a reaction to something else, such as nuts, or to something you ate somewhere else that day. Perhaps your reaction wasn't gluten related at all?

I wouldn't be comfortable recommending any other place for you, unfortunately, since in my experience Gratitude is one of the safest places to eat. Zadin's also seems completely safe to me, since the owner is completely knowledgable about the cc issues and assured me her staff was, too, and I've eaten there safely a number of times now.

I'm sorry it has been so hard for you to eat out.

Hi all,

I would really appreciate tapping some of your collective wisdom. Is there any restaurant in the San Fran SOMA area that is safe for a sensitive Celiac like me to eat?   So far I have had some success at Zadin (Castro), and Cafe Gratitude, and a few nicer sushi places elsewhere in the city, but have yet to find anything in SOMA.  At both Zadin and Gratitude, it has been hit or miss - some days I was fine, others I got a bit sick.   Since I live and work in SOMA, it would be great if there was somewhere that I could eat!

Thank you all so much.

Hi , I've eat at a few places in Soma. None of them have

specific gluten free menus, however, they were accomodating and I

didn't have any reactions. The ones I can think of off the top of my

head are Local Kitchen and Wine Merchant (330 1st Street), Town Hall,

and the Salt House. I've also eaten at the Acme Chop House

successfully. Of course, these are all somewhat on the expensive side,

which is a bummer these days.

Gratitude only uses wheat free tamari. I wonder if you tried one of their juices and there was wheat grass residue... I believe they actually have a separate blender for the wheatgrass -- they're supposed to juice the grass then add it to the glass of already poured juice; but I can imagine that sometimes someone might toss the wheat grass juice right into the blender with the other juices...

In any case, I sometimes have what I would swear are gluten reactions when I know I couldn't possibly have been glutened; it's a real drag trying to navigate all this, isn't it! But I keep telling myself, it's better than a lot of other things I could be saddled with!

Good luck!

I am also confused as to what glutened me at Gratitude.  Previous meals had been ok.  this time, I think there might have been a dressing or a sauce on the salad portion - it tasted vaguely like soy sauce, but I'm not sure.  they had said they would put the dressing on the side - which they did - but they forgot to take it out of the dish!   At Zadin, I have had some good meals and some not-so-good.  My suspicion there was the fried rolls.  I went back and talked to them about it and my next meal there was fine.  So, even at the good places, I think mistakes happen.

Thanks for the help.  I am trying not to get too frustrated about this.  It is not very social to always eat at home!

Raw food can also be very hard to digest. I know one thing that

consistently frustrates me is that sometimes I'm not sure if an upset

stomach is caused by non-gluten or gluten issues....

The soy sauce (shoji or whatever they call it) at Cafe Gratitude does in fact

contain gluten. Many of their Asian themed dishes contain soy sauce - even ones

that would not in traditional fare.

Most of the dishes are fine and there's little chance of cross contamination but

avoid anything that sounds Asian. Also I am susceptible to food poisoning and

have gotten it at Gratitude twice. Both times since they started preparing

everything off site. It is a big problem with eating raw foods - why they tell

pregnant women not to eat raw anything. So perhaps you were duffering from milk

food poisoning.

As for Zadin, I've never had any problems there but then I may be less sensitive

to cross contamination.

Cafe Gratitude uses wheat free tamari, which is stated on the menu and which I've been assured is the only kind of soy sauce used each time I have eaten there (many, many times). No other kind of soy sauce is used. I have an email into the cafe asking about gluten and will post their reply here.

Thanks,

Tristan
