Anyone encountering this should file a complaint with the FDA, and probably Consumer Reports.

Wow, this is so scary!! I have actually been eating Wellshire Farms

breakfast sausages every morning for breakfast, and every time have

that old familiar acid reaction: my throat burns a bit, the post

nasal drip returns, plus the day after effects.

I have also been suffering from an incurable sinus infection for the

past few months that has not responded to treatment. I ran out of

the sausages today and oddly enough, haven't had any sinus trouble.

Has anyone had problem with their sausages? I feel like it is a

stretch to imagine wheat in those since they are not even breaded,

but I guess there is risk of cross contamination.

I just bought some more sausages at Whole Foods about an hour ago, I

am going to go return them now, either way, it's not worth the risk!!

Man, I wish I had another ELISA EZ gluten test kit on hand, I just

used one on my lipstick to be certain that it was safe. But if I get

some more, I will definitely test it.

Thanks for keeping us posted!!!!

This is shocking, disturbing and wrong. Am I the only one who feels taken advantage of? It almost seems like they saw a market (gluten-free) that hadn't been tapped yet and decided to slap the GLUTEN-FREE label on their packaging.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm writing them and expressing my disgust in their company. They will remove those products and put new ones on the shelves WITHOUT the Gluten-Free label. I will make sure of that.

I just contacted my local Whole Foods (in Potrero Hill) and spoke with

the manager and am on my way to the store to return my Wellshire

products. I also left a message for Whole Foods corporate, I will let

you know if I hear anything back.

Whole Foods is a top resource for gluten free foods, and I would hope

that they would not want to risk their customer's health. I hope that

they will take action--I would imagine that would force Wellshire Farms

into a difficult position.

Thanks!

I just sent this letter to Wellshire Farms, hopefully it gets the point across. " To Whom It May Concern,

Let me start off by explaining Celiac Disease - It is an autoimmune

disease that attacks the small intestine, slowly destroying the body's

ability to get nutrients from food (vitamins) and overtime can destroy

the pancreas, cause intestinal cancers, Lupus and Diabetes. Those are

just some of the side-affects of Celiac Disease. This however is

avoidable by NOT consuming gluten containing foods.

So, what does this have to do with your company? When a Celiac (such as

myself) finds a food that they think they can trust (Wellshire Hot

Dogs), we eat quite a bit of that food. We will eat it weekly and in

some cases daily. If that " gluten-free " food contains ANY gluten - we

are REVERSING all of the hardwork that has been done in order to repair

our systems. This puts the community at a higher risk for intestinal

cancer, Diabetes, Osteoporosis, Thyroid Disease and Liver Disease. A

lot of your customers were children that were trusting their parents to

purchase them safe foods, so not only has Wellshire Farms created an

entire panic within the Celiac community as what to trust and what not

to trust, Wellshire Farms has put CHILDREN at a HIGHER risk to develop

those related diseases at a younger age.

Amazingly though, Wellshire Farms doesn't want to remove their products

off the shelves and RELABEL the product. I am not sure why this is.

Maybe you can help explain that? I would think that with any lawsuits

that would come from poisioning a large percentage of your customers,

you may just want to reconsider keeping your products on the shelves. I

can guarantee that there will be lawsuits, boycotting of your product

(which has already started with the Celiac community) and additional

media coverage to showcase Wellshire Farms complete lack of corporate

responsibility.

I would think that removing the product off the shelves for the purpose

of removing the Gluten-Free label, would actually be of benefit to your

company. It would show you cared about your Celiac, Wheat Allergic and

Gluten Intolerant consumers. It would also show that you aren't just

another company trying to take advantage of the gluten-free market.

Please remove your product off the shelves before it is TOO late and someone dies from a severe allergic reaction.

Thank you,

Crystal

Solano County Celiacs " (Hopefully I dotted all my i's and crossed all my t's. I will let everyone know what they response is.)On Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 3:11 PM, kristenevelyncampbell <kristenevelyncampbell@...> wrote:

And the USDA too (they regulate meat), although the article says that the FDA and the USDA are not doing anything about this.

I find it a bit annoying that Whole Foods has done nothing either.

I just went to return my Wellshire Farms products and no one there had

been told about it (by corporate or by the manager who I had previously

spoken with on the phone). I do still have hope that Whole Foods will

take action, but I would have expected them to have already done so.

They were quoted in the article, so knew what was coming.
