Guest guest
Just to note that you need to ask for it “special” tell them you have a wheat allergy (I know…it’s not an allergy, but that’s easier to explain to them). They will cook it on separate grill and I think they change their gloves. The “special” just insures that they will take extra care. Their burgers are very yummy! Subject: [ ] In and Out Burger - fantastic news We ate at two In and Out burgers over the weekend. My son and I are extremely sensitive. We ate the Protein only burgers (burger, cheese, tomatoes and lettuce) and had the french fries. It was the most amazing experience. The servers were friendly and knowledgeable….I realize now that I could have asked much more but having just had a heinous experience with Mc’s I was gun shy (see below). The kitchen was incredibly clean and I could see the entire process – the potoates were chipped right in front of you and put into dedicated fryers. There was a bun station that was separate to everything else and definitely away from the burgers. We ate well –a huge treat for my son who can’t usually eat at these places. I just called them - 1-800-786-1000 – the customer service rep was again knowledgeable and friendly. He said that the only thing they have with gluten is the bun. I have experienced before that people say this but they don’t know what they’re talking about – I asked him how he know --- he said that he was reading from an allergen sheet. The beef patties, cheese, spread, salad, milkshakes, ketchup, mustard, sodas are all gluten free. Seems almost too good to be true but I am thrilled. Of course, if you know otherwise, please do let me know. Mc’s: - Excuse me could you let me know what you have that is gluten free? - We don’t have any free meals here. - I’m sorry, I didn’t mean do you have any free meals. I meant could you let me know the ingredients of the food as my son and I are allergic to gluten. - We don’t know. - But I think Mcs lists this on it’s website? - I don’t know what you’re talking about. I persevered some more. The place was filthy. There is no doubt that cross-contamination would occur. The people had absolutely no interest in helping. Am sure it varies from restaurant to restaurant . Today I went and looked at their menu --- -there is very little that is gluten free. Just my experience. Guest guest
Yes, that’s right – each time the server shouted “Special protein only burger” – they seemed really diligent. b From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Amy Bhatnagar Sent: Monday, March 02, 2009 6:33 PM Subject: RE: [ ] In and Out Burger - fantastic news Just to note that you need to ask for it “special” tell them you have a wheat allergy (I know…it’s not an allergy, but that’s easier to explain to them). Guest guest
The only other thing to be aware of at In and Out is the sauce, there is a cross contamination issue there. --- In , " Bronwyn Syiek " <bronwyn@...> wrote: > > Yes, that's right - each time the server shouted " Special protein only > burger " - they seemed really diligent. b > > > > From: > [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Amy Bhatnagar > Sent: Monday, March 02, 2009 6:33 PM > > Subject: RE: [ ] In and Out Burger - fantastic news > > > > Just to note that you need to ask for it " special " tell them you have a > wheat allergy (I know...it's not an allergy, but that's easier to > explain to them). Guest guest
There is indeed a CC issue with the sauce, as it is in a giant tub and they dip a knife in to spread it on the bread. If you like the sauce, they have packet of it behind the counter (like ketchup) that you can grab and put on your burger, but I would not get the spread, I usually get ketchup and mustard which is in squeeze bottles. I also tell them I have a wheat allergy and they are really good about it.
Guest guest
I agree with Amy that you should say that you are allergic to wheat. People seem to understand about allergies while they are very ignorant to gluten. They all seem to understand that and make sure that there is no cross contamination. I have been eating at In and Out for ten years and have never had a problem with them when I order the protein style burgers and say that I have a wheat allergy. There Fries are the only fast food restaurant that I will eat them at. The only thing they cook in any of their friers is the fries so that makes sure they are safe. I have also had very good success with Carl's Jr. with their low carb burger. You can get any burger they have low carb style. In ten years I have only had one incident of cross contamination and that is because I forgot to say I was allergic to wheat. Mark
