Guest guest
Liz, I spent two days in the hospital with this disease and therefore have some experience with it. My understanding based on my reading is that it is neither curable nor reversible. However, I have just begun reading about bowel cleanse products and strategies which may (I hope) ultimately suggest otherwise. Nevertheless, the best recommendation I have is the standard line of increasing fiber and fluid intake while reducing or moderating intake of meats (red in particular) and other junk. It seems that there is no way to make those little 'diverticula' go away so you just have to try and keep them from getting clogged with junk. For me the way to do that is with hydration...plenty of water and increased fiber intake. Exercise doesn't hurt either. My theory is, in retrospect, that instead of spending 10 excruciating hours in the ER before being seen by a dcotor with my first onset, if I had drunk a gallon or so of water and then gone for a jog (which may have loosened up the material stuck in those pockets) I would have saved myself a few thousand bucks in medical bills. Ultimately, my hospital stay was a very expensive and not too enjoyable 'vacation.' Anyway, hindsight is 20/20. But that's my take on the potential role of exercise...with plenty of water it may help keep the stuff from getting too 'stuck' in these pockets. The only other things I've learned about it are that the younger you are when you have diverticulitis, the more likely you are to get it again, according to studies. That's why doctors are more inclined to recommend surgery if you are, say, under forty the first time it happens. The bottom line is this. The goal is to reduce 'intracolonic pressure,' the pressure inside the colon so that these little pockets do not develop or become packed with fecal material which leads to the inflammation/infection. The best way to do that is through diet management...same old stuff you always keep hearing. Hope this helps. The meds cost $72 for 6 days. At the end of that round of drugs, she still wasn't feeling well and in 2 more weeks she had fever and sick again but didn't have the $$ for the refill. She asked me if I would loan it to her. I said only if you will try something first. From reading Back To Eden by Jethro Kloss I learned to use 2 parts golenseal, 1 part myrrh and some cayenne. She did very well on this and has not a flare up since. Edith

Congratulations!!! By the way, is that all she did? Or did she change her diet in any way? How long did it take to heal? I'm sure she still has the pockets but has not had another situation like that where there was infection. She was better immediately. I can't remember how long she took the 3 herbs togather. This the same thing I used 2 winters ago when I had the colon problem here I was passing a blob of blood/mucous. It started as a virus then moved down to the colon area. Also used aloe vera juice and slippery elm. Edith
