Guest guest
Hi Rooney, I am so sorry that you were treated so poorly. I have been a registered nurse for 30 years and I have to say that yours is not the first case where a doctor was prejudiced against a person who was overweight. I know of several examples off the top of my head, where a doctor poo-pooed a person when it turned out to be something quite serious. I would write down everything that occured and report him to the local medical board. I also have seen doctors minimize womens issues and older persons issues as well. I am very thin due to digestive problems and a lot of doctors did not take me seriously. I was very persistent and finally found one who listened. I have severe gluten intolerance and had 6 intestinal infections due to my immune system being weakened. I also am allergic to a lot of foods, so I understand how hard it can be. Unfortunately there are some jerks out there. Take care, June > > I was in the hospital recently and this gi doctor was brought in to diagnose my sever abdominal pain. I had been having sever pain, fever and cold not keep liquids down. this guy walks in takes one look at me and says your problem is your fat. Does not really read my chart or take the other doctors advice that I need certain tests run. He goes on to tell me if I just dieted and exercised more I would be fine. He knows nothing about my life or other health issues including celiac and a nubmer of food allergies. He asks me if I have lost weight while being sick I say yes alot he tells me that's good. I told him I cant eat and can barley keep water down. he said for an obese person like you (yes I am 30-40 pounds overweight from medical reasons) going home and being on a water diet for a few weeks would do you some good. I told him he need to actually read my chart he comes back and says oh, i guess you do have something wrong we need to run more tests. he runs the tests, then says you have something wrong with you we found damage. that's it he walks out the room, does not tell me what that means, what I have, how to treat it, or any meds to help, etc... the other doctors at the hospital were so outraged by his comments and acutaly apologized to me and suggested that I file a complaint with the california medical board. > > here is the link to my yelp review if you want to know the name of this local gi doctor > http://www.yelp.com/biz/dr-hashem-farr-san-jose >
Guest guest
What horrible treatment. I am so sorry to hear you had to go through being abused on top of being ill. You should write letters to the hospital and to the state medical board. You can file a complaint with the latter here: http://www.medbd.ca.gov/consumer/complaint_info.html They need to know what a loser this guy is (and it might help you feel better). Complaining on Yelp was a good start! Prejudice based on body size is a big issue for many patients. I have heard from friends who are heavy that they couldn't get a doctor to talk about their sore throat or broken finger because of doctors who were obsessed with their weight. Personally, I've had problems on both ends--I used to be thin, so I couldn't get my hypothyroidism diagnosed (my doctor's reasoning being that I couldn't be hypothyroid because I was thin, so why test for it?) and then once the disease made me fat, I had three different doctors tell me that my problem was that I was fat, and if I lost weight I would no longer have problems. It took five years to get a proper diagnosis from a caring doctor who could see beyond blaming me for being fat to the underlying medical issues. Best wishes for good health--and putting this doctor in his place! Guest guest
thanks for sharing, I hope you do file the complaint! That is so outragious, not only that he would be so horribly rude, but especially that he didn't take your serious medical problem at all seriously! ----- Original Message ----- From: rooneys86 Sent: Thursday, June 18, 2009 11:08 AM Subject: [ ] warning about local gi doctor! Guest guest
The other place to file a complaint is with the medical director of the hospital. Hospitals are afraid of malpractice suits. If he is a staff physician, the medical director is his boss. If he isn't a staff physician, the medical director has the power to revoke his hospital rights.thanks for sharing, I hope you do file the complaint!
