Guest guest
Scrambl'z Restaurant just opened at 5055 Almaden Expressway in San . (408) 269-2900. I stopped in to ask the manager some questions about their ingredients and was pleasantly surprised! They are opened only for breakfast and lunch. Their breakfast menu has a lot of the usual pancakes, crepes and waffles; however, there are a lot of g-f menu items we can choose from! I spoke with their manager, Joleen, who did some research for me. Their hash brown potatoes and campfire potatoes (boiled potatoes with g-f seasonings) are gluten free. Their bacon and sausage have no flour or wheat products. You get two sides with your bacon and egg breakfast, so you could order some potatoes and then some cottage cheese, fruit, tomatoes or maybe their yogurt (I did not check these ingredients yet). You can split plates without a charge, too. Now for lunch....drum roll please....their french fries are gluten- free! No other floured product is fried in their oil – in fact NO product is fried in their oil except their french fries! Jim, the owner, understands food allergies are becoming very common, so he is trying to make his food as simple as possible. They have all kinds of listed hamburgers for lunch (with bacon, cheese, avocado, mushrooms, etc.), so you could actually order a hamburger (w/o the bun of course) and french fries for lunch! Their chicken in their salads and sandwiches is gluten-free – no marinade or sauce is put on their chicken. If you order any of their salads with chicken in it, be sure to ask any pertinent questions about the other ingredients in the salad (i.e., their chicken and walnut salad contains glazed walnuts – glazed with what?). Regarding their salad dressings, I only asked about their spicy ranch dressing and they use the Hidden Valley Spicy packet, so do not know if it is g-f or not yet. Need to do more research. I did not want to overwhelm them with tons of questions at first – right now I'm just happy to be able to order bacon, eggs and potatoes for breakfast and a hamburger and french fries for lunch! This is just a preliminary informational post - I have NOT eaten at this restaurant yet. I just wanted to pass on the information that they are very open and friendly about accommodating our gluten free diet. Eating out is risky, so it is your responsibility to ask whatever questions you need to in order to enjoy your meal there. Sue
