Guest guest
I had no idea this place even existed! i'm going to try it out. I haven't had a good sandwich in over 4 years. How did you know that they offer gluten free sandwiches? I didn't see anything on their website or on Yelp re: GF. We handle cross contamination the same way we deal with vegan/vegetarian and meat sandwiches in that we make the sandwiches separately from other the sandwiches not of the same kind. For the gluten free bread, we take the added measure of making the sandwiches on our sandwich wrap and do our best to keep them away from the bread sandwiches. Normally when someone requests a gluten free sandwich, we ask how severe of an allergy they have. I wouldn't feel comfortable making a sandwich for someone that is severely gluten intolerant. We are, after all, a sandwich shop, and bread and crumbs are looming everywhere. If you or someone you know has a severe allergy, it is best to be safe and not take the risk. As of this day, I am yet to hear of a customer complain about a reaction from one of our sandwiches. I hope this helps. Guest guest
I had an outstanding gf sandwich there, and no reaction. It was so much fun to eat a sandwich out. However, as your contact points out, there are crumbs everywhere. The bit I was most concerned about is whether or not they toast the gf bread in the same sandwich press--I'm not sure, but I didn't get sick. --lp ________________________________________ From: [ ] On Behalf Of Melita [leftcoastmelita@...] Sent: Saturday, April 25, 2009 7:50 PM Subject: [ ] Ikes Place Has anyone tried this place? Guest guest
Thanks, Ike. I wish all of the restaurants that we (those who have or know know someone with celiac sprue or gluten allergies) contact were as honest, thoughtful, and pragmatic about the safety of what you serve and the environment in which you prepare it as you are. Some restaurant owners, chefs, managers, and waitstaff are not so careful, and people are occasionally glutened, sometimes dangerously so. Just remember that one in ten have a wheat allery, and one in a hundred have the celiac autoimmune condition, so there is a significant market out here looking for safe, reasonably prices to eat. If you devise a way of being even more sure of preventing cross-contamination, I think that you would have every wheat/oats/rye/barely gluten-adverse person stopping at your place when they come to the city.Again, thanks, HogleFreelance academic librarianInstructor, online researchEmail: jjhogle@...Web: www.blueroom.comReality ain't what you think it isArt Graphics & Photographs[http://www.blueroom.com/realityaint.htm]------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: [ ] On Behalf Of Melita [leftcoastmelita@ sbcglobal. net] Sent: Saturday, April 25, 2009 7:50 PM Subject: [ ] Ikes Place Has anyone tried this place? Guest guest
I added Ike’s to the database even though I haven’t personally gone there: I hope someone who has will add their comments. Just a reminder that everyone and anyone can add their favorite (or not so favorite) businesses to this list. Does the shop have a list of which sandwich ingredients are gf? Looks like they have a huge list of stuff to put on the sandwiches. I may have to devise a trip to SF just to visit. Pam From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of flatcat9@... Guest guest
I did try this place, and it was super yummy! They had 3 different bread options that were gluten free, and based on what kind of fillings I wanted actually recommended which bread would hold all the ingrediants best (you know how some gf bread can fall apart). It was regular sized gf sandwich bread size...which of all you familar know it's smaller than 'regular' bread. The sandwich was warm and toasty and it was great to go there with my vegetarian sister and both get our needs met with no hassle! > > Has anyone tried this place? > This is the response I got. > This is the place. > http://www.ilikeikesplace.com/index.html > > > > > ----- Forwarded Message ---- > From: Ike Shehadeh <ike00shehadeh@...> > Sent: Saturday, April 25, 2009 7:16:13 PM > Subject: RE: From website > > Hello Melita, > > I am happy to report that Ike's Place does use a wheat and gluten free bread.
