I think sunflower butter and honey sounds like it would work well.

My son made one in preschool and they used lard instead of peanut butter. I

thought it was very strange, but the birds picked it clean!

You can use any vegetable shortening (e.g., Crisco) and the birds will love it!

We did such a project recently, and the bigger problem was finding birdseed that

wasn't manufactured with peanuts. We ended up buying some parakeet seed.
