Well I know an epidural numbs you , I didnt get

one for my delivery, I had demrol instead and that

numbed me. Are they going to give a local anesthetic

with the epidural? I have never been awake for a

surgery, and I hear ya when you say you dont want to see

or hear anything, i would'nt eighter. But one thing

with the epidural is you are not " sober " your kinda

outta of it. I had surgery 1week and a half ago, and im

still experiencing an amount of swelling. As for scard

tissue, there is always a bit of it after surgery.
I

hope this has been a bit helpfull, although I havent

experienced what you are going through, just try not to think

about it ,everything will go well for you. I wish you

luck and a good recovery!

Kat

If you have been reading the post you know you have plenty of company

out there. I'm sure you'll be hearing from them. I am really sorry to

hear about this, but on the bright side those who've had it say it's so

much better.

When and where is your surgery, and who is doing it?

, I hope you've tuned in to all the successful

esophagectomy stories lately and know what to expect -- like

being able to almost forget how it once was. I'm praying that it

will go very smoothly. You will be in good hands.

By the way we loved Georgia -- the Georgia Music Hall of Fame,

Stone Mountain, Providence Canyon, Americus, etc. It was hot but

the people were great, along with the food and sights.

Hi , Probably I am a new member in your eyes , as you mention you haven't been on the board for a long time. Your case sounds pretty familiar to me, I had my 2nd surgery last January and I am going for my -ectomy coming March. Sorry to hear that you are now facing an -ectomy too. I just wanted to let you know, that you're not alone on this one (but you pretty much new that upfront I guess). Lately there have been many members going for the -ectomy: , Deb, , , me and others ( and I haven't had the surgery yet). I feel very confident about the -ectomy nowadays and can't wait for it to be over and done with. I have met an achalasian -ectomy patient (had his -ectomy done 5 or 6 y. ago) and he's so healthy and strong! I can't wait to be that way again too. The achalasia itself has been

putting me down a bit these last few days, reason the more to look forward to the -ectomy. Hopefully you are feeling confident, strong and positive towards your upcoming surgery too. I wish you the very very best for your surgery and will be thinking about you. Isabella <mt4mar@...> wrote: Hello all. Thanks for the support. It seems more of us are heading twards that surgery. This is the end surgery that I hope many do not have to face if they can get the proper help right up front. It is a big step, a nessessary one though. I was really hoping after my last surgery two years ago that I would be good for many years and I would not have to face this as soon as I am. My prayers are there for you also in your up coming surgery. Hi ,

I'm sorry to hear about your upcoming esophagectomy. If it's any consolation, I am recovering quicker from my esophagectomy than my last open myotomy. I am in less pain, my neck incision has never hurt at all. The most pain is from my thoracotomy. My incision in my chest area had 25 staples and I am able to sit up straight and walk fine. My back on my right side hurts quite a lot though. I am already eating a soft diet and doing well. My esophagectomy was October 1st. Now I have incisions on both sides. I had both of my open myotomies on the left side and my esophagectomy on the right. I hope I'm done!!! (I still have the J-tube for six weeks though, but it doesn't even bother me).

Best of luck to you,

achalasia From: mt4mar@...Date: Thu, 18 Oct 2007 23:55:01 +0000Subject: More surgery

My dear Ann....This kind of came on real suddenly about 3 months ago. I was sleeping one night and I was woke up and my throat felt like it collapsed or something and I could not swallow at all. That feeling went away after about 2 minutes. The next day I stated having trouble eating and drinking again. I went right to my doctor and told them I needed check to she what was going on. Well after 5 different doctors here I am waiting for them to schedule the last surgery. I new this day was coming but I really was hoping it was not this soon. Yes on the up side I will be done with it and I then can call my self a former Achalasian. Dear Marin, I found out when i went in for a routine (well i thought it was routine) Botox injection last December that my O had deteriorated to a point of no return. Like you I ws hoping that my oesophagectomy was a long way off, but after a long year i am now three months post operative of an oesophagectomy and am living a new life. From where you are i know how scary this is to you but have faith in your doctors and the skill of the surgeon and you will be a new man in a short time. I am thinking of you. So sorry to hear you need the 'ectomy now. Welcome to the club, which

seems to be growing by leaps and bounds these days unfortunately. You

have many here to lean on that have been through it, myself included.

I had mine back in March by Dr. Rice at TCC. I am approaching 7 months

without my esophagus and things are going great. Dr. Rice actually

uses me as a reference for the surgery - what an honor to have my name

given out by him as one of his successful patients! Yes, there are

adjustments to be made, but luckily we are used to doing that since

we've been struggling with achalasia all these years. On the flip

side, prior to my surgery it was almost a relief to think of not

having to deal with the achalasia issues/risks anymore. Yes, the

surgery is very scary - I'm certainly not trying to downplay any of

it. But setting aside the obvious, once you are through it and

recovered it really isn't that bad.

I wish you all the courage and strength in the world to help you

through this challenging time, and please don't hesitate to ask

questions or vent or share your fears and thoughts with us. We are all

here for you.

Love,

in NY

Hi ,

I had similar symptoms and was told that it was the initial stages of the

It was shortly after that I made the dcecision to have the esophahectomy. I

, I am so sorry to hear this news and you certainly have my prayers. The surgery is no picnic I understand, according to my husband. He had a radical prostatectomy 16 years ago.

His was not contained, so they were not able to get it all. They followed with 34 treatments of radiation.Just like with achalasia, the treatments are so much better now than they were 16 years ago. So hopefully, since your's has not spread you'll be good for another 100 years.

We'll certainly be praying for that. Please let us hear from you as soon as you are able.

And may I add a story:

My husband's uncle was in the retail mattress business for many years. He has a heart attack, surgery, prostate cancer, several rounds of treatment and surgery, about 10 or more years ago. He sold/retired/moved from the Los Angeles area to San Diego then, got bored, found a mattress store, started working there, bought it, worked it for a few years, retired/sold/moved to Salt Lake City area a few years ago. Got bored, found a mattress store again, and has been working there the past 2 or 3 years. All with prostate cancer. He is mid 80's now. Hardly slowed him down. Hasn't found a mattress store that can survive without him yet. The prostate cancer has stayed about the same the whole time.

In early March I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Dear ,

What I wish for you is that you will be brave and determined. You have already had more than your fair share of problems, but the news from your MRI scan is very good to know and there is no reason why you should not be able to get through this and put it behind you. I know you have a difficult time to go through now, but keep your heart strong and believing.

Dear ,

Life can be so unfair sometimes, eh? As if you didn't already go through enough... But thinking that way doesn't help us at all, so we better think with fighting spirit. You have shown in the past how much fighting spirit you have in you, so use it this time as well, OK?

Wishing you the very very best of luck! Hang in there!

through enough... But thinking that way doesn't help us at all, so we

better think with fighting spirit. You have shown in the past how much

fighting spirit you have in you, so use it this time as well, OK?

thought that it may have gone to my bones as the bone scan showed dark

spots on my ribs right side only but after a lengthy MRI it turned out

to be cracked ribs as a result of at fall I had last December. The Dr.

believes it is localized and surgery should take card of it but won't

know that for sure for some time.
