Guest guest
Jere and Shayna, My husband just had his second opinion and a 4 level c4-7 with fusion was recommended. The first guy recommended a laminectomy. Both are supposed to have excellent reputations, but we are going for opinions 3 and 4. The first guy said to think about the surgery in 3 months. Today, this one is saying to have it next week, and Dave would be out of his collar by our trip, July 17. That sure doesn't sound real, according to Jere. He was also using the scare tactic of possible cord injury if Dave fell. The first Dr. didn't mention that, and both used the same MRI. Needless to say, we are confused, and now my husband is scared. Shayna, I was reassured about the surgery, so you should go into it feeling confident. He said he had patients who went back to work after a week, although he didn't recommend it. He said it had a 95% success rate. He did say Dave would have neck pain because of the fusion. Good luck tomorrow! MI **************Get trade secrets for amazing burgers. Guest guest
Hi Shayna, I had anterior discectomy with fusion on the 2nd of May. It seems that everything went very well for me. I have to wear a rigid neck brace at least until the end of June and use a bone growth stimulator for four hours a day for at least six months. Most of the usual preop symptoms are gone. I have taken no pain meds since I've been home other than the Tylenol that I already take for RA. I posted a detailed report on 5/18/2008 if you wish to check back. Jere More Surgery Well, Having another Surgery tomorrow morning. Posterior Microdiscectomy of C-4,5,6. Wish me luck. Anyone else had this and how did you do with it? Still recovering from Lumbar Discectomy, Laminotomy and foraminotomy. Doing much better with it, pain is considerably better. Guess I was expecting perfection, but I have to say the improvement is incredible. Nerve pain is all but gone. Still a little inflammation, but not even close to the pain before surgery. All in all, was the right decision. So, let me know what to expect from the Cervical surgery, okay? Thanks, Shayna

Guest guest
I appreciate all your responses. It helps a great deal. I think I am luckier than most in that I am only having a microdiscectomy on the cervical section. I just hope it is enough. My doc is pretty conservative, which can be both a good and a bad thing. It seems like everyone else in the world is having fusion when they have their cervical surgeries. Maybe it isn't needed in my case. Again, thank you all for your well wishes, prayers and advice. I will post again when I can. Not sure how I will feel the first few days after surgery. I must say, if the lumbar surgery is any indication of the relief I will have with the cervical, then I am looking forward to doing this now. Thanks again, I will post soon. Guest guest
, I think the reason I have to wear the neck brace for so long is the condition of my bones. They are softer than normal. I take the brace off three times a day now to do PT. We have a trip coming up on Aug. 3rd and my surgeon says I'll be good to go by then for sure. I was having trouble walking before the surgery, I couldn't pass a field sobriety test and I don't even drink, so I was also warned about a fall causing further damage. I had an EMG and a nerve conduction study done before the surgery that showed decreased nerve reaction because of the pinching in the neck. You know that tuning fork looking gizmo they use to test your ability to feel things in your arms and legs? I couldn't feel that at all below the ankles. As best as we could tell through research on the web and the doctors, I had no other choice. There was no other course of treatment that would fix the problem. So surgery was the way we went. Hope this helps. Jere Re: More Surgery Jere and Shayna, My husband just had his second opinion and a 4 level c4-7 with fusion was recommended. The first guy recommended a laminectomy. Guest guest
I am looking forward to more head/skull surgery. They want to do plastic surgery on me as soon as possible. They want to take muscle from my back, and close it up. They will also need to take skin from my back as well. The surgeries never end! I still have not gone back to work. I hope they get it wrapped up before April at the latest. Carol
