Oops, I sent before I finished.

We're travelling to the following places:

Africa: Namibia, Tanzania, South Africa

South America: Argentina, Chile, Brazil (Amazon area), Peru

SE Asia: Thailand (I know it won't be too hard to eat here), Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos

Any thoughts/suggestions would be really helpful. thanks!

Hi All

DH and I just decided that we will be taking off in Sept on a long trip...we are in the very intial planning stages but I thought I would ask for your thoughts/experiences eating in the following places. Any suggestions would be most helpful.

Africa: Tanzania

I've traveled lots in Argentina and Chile and did very well in both. Argentina is very well-versed in celiac disease. I went to a nice restaurant in Mendoza. I started explaining to the waiter that I couldn't eat anything with wheat, barley, or rye, and he just looked at me and said "oh, you have celiac?" I was stunned and thought I hadn't heard him correctly. I have family there and they said that celiac disease is pretty common there. I even saw an icer-cream shop that said "gluten-free." Argentina should be no problem. Chile is a bit behind, but awareness is growing. There is a supermarket chain called "Jumbo" that has a whole gluten-free isle.
