There really isnt anywhere. I live in Santa Cruz (Capitola) and i dont eat out b/c there isnt anywhere to go. THe closest GF restuarant is in s Valley (Jia Tella's, it's cambodian)I sometimes brave the sushi places downtown (Shogun, Mobo...). They used to have a place "La Vie" that had GF stuff, but it went out of business. There's a New Leaf grocery store on Pacific (downtown) that has GF items. There's also the new Whole Foods on Soquel (5 minutes from downtown) Good luck!

Hi all,

My family & I will be in Santa Cruz tomorrow & will be needing a place to eat. Does anyone have a place they can recommend? We will be by the boardwalk, so someplace around there would be preferable.

Sorry for the short notice on asking, we just figured it out today.

Thanks!

We ended up going to Hula’s on

Cathecart.  They were great!  The head chef herself came out & answered our

questions.  My son & I both ate there without incident.  (So did my

husband, but then, he can eat anything, so of course there would be no incident

with him).

We had the spring rolls, the sashimi, the abalone

& the cevichi.  I had the wasabi grilled Ahi with wasabi crème & wasabi

mashed potates.  They gave me oil, vinegar, salt, pepper & shallots for the

dressing as the usual salad dressing is not GF.  I highly recommend them.  We

had a great time.

Oh, and, they make great rum drinks.  I

had a double Painkiller.  Actually I had two.  They were reeeeeeeeeeealy good.

Thank you to whoever put that up on the

list eons ago.  (And thank God I am an email packrat!)

Ps – I hope you didn’t eat the sweet potato fries.  They have

wheat in the ingredients…found that out the second time I went there.  So even

though they’re fried in their own fryer, the product itself isn’t safe.

I agree with , Santa Cruz is severely lacking in Gluten Free dining options, but Hula's is one of my go to restraunts. I usually get their fish tacos or their ahi sashimi and have never had a problem. I've also spoken with their head chef and she seems to have a fairly good understanding of gluten issues. They have a list of food allergens available on request which has been very helpful. The New Leaf Market that just opened off of Fair Street has one of the better gluten free selections I've seen. All the standard products plus many things which I hadn't previously heard of...

Is there a new chef?  I went to Hula’s when it first opened 2years ago and got sick off the fish tacos.  Maybe they’ve become more strict withtheir food allergy practices.  I’m a little weary to try it again, but maybe it’schanged.  That’s great news about the Fair St new leaf, I’ve driven pastit but haven’t checked it out yet! They were very open about that fact.  We

wanted to get them, but the head chef said not to because there was wheat.  I

think if you ask to speak to the chef you’ll be fine.  I wouldn’t

trust the servers, but the head chef was very solicitous, and double checked

everything for us.  What did you get that made you sick?  Maybe if you sent

them an email, they could learn from it.  Also, maybe if enough of us go there,

they will start a GF menu – just a thought!  I know if the head chef knew

you had gotten sick she would be mortified, and take steps to make sure it didn’t

happen to anyone else.

Did I mention the abalone and the spring rolls

are to DIE for?  (Oh, and don’t use the peanut dipping sauce that comes with

the spring rolls, it has soy sauce in it).

Not sure about the chef, but they did change the recipe for the fish tacos about a year ago...

I would imagine they have either changed

chefs, become stricter, or both, since the thing she recommended right off the

bat were the fish tacos. “The fish tacos are always your safest bet”, were, I

think, her words. Something to that effect anyway. I can’t imagine she would

say that if she wasn’t sure.

Maybe call ahead & see what nights she’s

working, just so you can speak with her directly. I went on a Saturday night.

I’m pretty sure they must have learned

somewhere along the way, because I asked if the fries were made in a dedicated

fryer, and she said “yes, but don’t get them, they’re not safe, they’re coated

in wheat” – so my guess is they have learned somewhere along the way. I can certainly

understand your reluctance though. But I can guarantee you, if I didn’t get

sick, no one will. (At least, with the same foods I ordered with the same

precautions I took – hold the won tons, no dressing, no peanut dipping sauce).

I am the proverbial canary in a coal mine, so you can be absolutely certain

that there was to even a trace of gluten in what I ate.
