Today's Dear Abby column mentions celiac disease (in the context of a child's

behavior problems prior to diagnosis). As far as I can tell, Dear Abby's column

has never mentioned the word " celiac " before. It's mentioned only in passing

today and no follow-up is given by Abby. If Dear Abby gives some concrete

information about celiac disease it could help a lot of people. If a large

number of people respond to a specific topic, Dear Abby usually devotes an

entire column to it.

SO PLEASE SEND HER YOUR BRIEF CELIAC STORY AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!

Here's Dear Abby's email form:

Here's today's column:

Please circulate this to other celiac lists! I also hope some people will post

the letters they write.

Thanks for the info . Here's what I wrote:

"I recently read a letter from 'ashamed' about loving a difficult child. I am adult who was recently diagnosed with Celiac Disease. I am fortunate to have caught it early before the symptoms took over my life. However, I have heard so many stories similar to hers. While I don't want everyone to run out and assume their 'spirited' child has Celiac, I do think more people should be aware of it as a possibility. "

Great letter, ! Here's the one I sent in today:

Dear Abby:

I am writing in response to " Enlightened in Minnesota " whose son's behavior

problems were caused by undiagnosed celiac disease. Please let your readers know

that undiagnosed celiac disease can also be the cause of anemia, infertility,

digestive ailments, osteoporosis, failure to thrive in babies, and many other

medical problems in people of all ages.

My son was diagnosed with celiac disease at the age of eight after having

symptoms for four years. Abby, I was stunned to find out that American doctors

are poorly informed about celiac and often misdiagnose it, even though it is one

of the most common genetic diseases in the world. Research by the Mayo clinic

shows that one in 133 Americans has it. Unbelievably, ninety-seven percent of

Americans with celiac disease are undiagnosed.

When celiacs eat gluten, a protein in wheat, rye and barley, it damages their

small intestine and causes malnutrition. Symptoms are extremely varied and can

mimic other medical conditions. The only treatment is a gluten-free diet for

life. Please remind people to get tested for celiac disease before they change

their diet. Diagnosis starts with a simple blood test.

Please go to www.celiac.org or call the Celiac Disease Foundation at (818)

990-2354.
