Guest guest
I thought I was going to have exciting news, but I don’t (however I’ll share anyway). My coworker biked in from Aptos today and saw a big sign outside Britannia Arms (not sure if any of you know about that pub/sports bar.) Anyway the sign said “Gluten Free Fish & Chips.” Well, I called there (831.688.1233) and asked if they have a separate fryer to fry the GF fish and chips in and she said no. They fry other batter fish, chicken wings, and potatoes (not sure if they’re coated or not.) I explained to her that the sign is misleading, and by frying a GF item in a fryer that fries “wheat” items makes the GF F & C no longer GF and that it’s not safe for a Celiac. She sort of blew me off a little, probably thought I was lying or didn’t really understand (or want to) what I was saying. So it’s just a heads up for anyone down in my area, don’t be fooled. But also, it was nice to see another attempt at something GF…now we just have to get them to understand how to safely cook these GF items they bring in. I am going to go over to the restaurant and try to explain better in person and see if I get anywhere. I’m not sure, but I don’t think BA is necessarily a chain, but I do know there are a handful of other Britannia Arms. I wonder if they are trying the same thing? -
Guest guest
I'm wondering if, along with their "Gluten Free Fish and Chips" effort, they are offering gluten free beer? If they get the cross contamination issue settled, this could be a nice option for south county entertainment. Guest guest
As a follow-up, I called them today and I think that either the sign was wrong or your friend may have misread the sign. The very nice woman who answered the phone told me that they don't have gluten free fish and chips. They are now using zero trans fat/cholesterol free oil for their fryers. <sigh> > > I thought I was going to have exciting news, but I don't (however I'll > share anyway).
