Guest guest
No diet is going to cause worms. Worms cause worms. Diet doesn't. H. Hello group, Has anyone tried the SCD? I am going to start it. I also have a few friends who started it but I just heard one had a ton of worms come out in her stool. The other said they had some large bowel movements with weird stringy things in it. That is sort of freaking me out. thank you gem=) -----Original Message----- From: Gemma R Locatelli <gemmalocat> Sent: Sat, Oct 17, 2009 11:12 am Subject: [ ] Specific Carbohydrate Diet (Breaking the Vicous Cycle) Hello group, Has anyone tried the SCD? Guest guest
H, I know this. I assumed it had something to do with a die off, (yeast, toxins so on) and your body getting healthier. I just d not know how or what I would feel about seeing parasites come out of my body. I am sorry it is just gross to me. gem=) > > > No diet is going to cause worms. Worms cause worms. Guest guest
Web sites dedicated to this diet claim the diet "cures" diseases such as Crohn's and celiac (see this site as an example -- http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/beginners_guide/beginners.htm). Yet only individual testimonials in support are provided; individual testimonials mean nothing, because causality cannot be proven - people may misremember their symptoms; misinterpret their response to a diet; may have had transient symptoms that went away because of some other change or because the nature of their illness was transitory or because the disease they had ran its course; or be so dedicated to their belief in some alternative form of medicine that they fall victim to "wishful thinking" because they can't bear to admit their chosen method doesn't work. The sites about this diet also insist that the diet is "scientifically based" without offering any scientific proof of its efficacy. It is not scientifically based. This diet has not been scientifically studied and appears likely to be completely bogus and potentially harmful. User beware. The idea that use of the diet will cause worms to appear in one's feces is blatantly ridiculous. If a person did have an intestinal parasite, they would have diarrhea and would only be cured of the parasite by taking antibiotics. http://www.healthsystem.virginia.edu/UVaHealth/peds_digest/tract.cfm http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/diarrhea/#cause -----Original Message----- From: gemmal <gemmalocat> Sent: Sun, Oct 18, 2009 10:08 am Subject: [ ] Re: Specific Carbohydrate Diet (Breaking the Vicous Cycle) H, I know this. Guest guest
Hi, When I responded with my personal experience about the SCD I wasn't at all saying that it " cured " my CD, although the diet is strictly GF by nature, which is why I even considered trying it out. I just wanted to be clear on that. It was, however, extremely healing to my gut after my gall bladder surgery and the sequelae from that. I did not expect it to cure my CD by any means! Just wanted to put that out there in response to the comment that the diet was not " scientifically proven " . I will also say that the SCD was recommended to me by two of my doctors, one a GI specialist in Santa Cruz, and another a Holistic Western trained MD, both who told me it had helped some of their patients " by report " of these patients symptoms. Both of them even had the book in their office to lend to patients which is how I found out about it in the first place. I also went over the plan with my dietician for nutritional content since I was anemic and lactose intolerant at the time. After studying the scientific reasoning behind the SCD and having my chemistry researcher husband read the book, I decided that there was absolutely nothing harmful about it, for me at least. In fact it is an extremely nutritious food plan that eliminated only foods that were not good for me anyway (like processed meats, high lactose cheeses, milk, foods with sugar in them). The only question for me was whether eliminating all grains except nut flours (not really grains) would help all the bloating, and pain I was having. This is common in malabsorption conditions due to the fermentation process since the carbohydrates tend to remain in the intestines instead of being absorbed into the bloodstream causing that lovely gas and bloating many of us are familiar with! As I mentioned, I did this food plan for a year. The reason I kept it up for so long is because I felt so much better. I then followed the plan in the book for gradually adding foods back into my diet to see what I could handle. Although I now eat some GF grains, I don't eat many because I definitely have a reaction when I over do them. This may be due to having no gall bladder on top of the CD, who knows?! Good luck with your decision. G.
Guest guest
My understanding of this diet is that it basically " starves " off bad bacteria that live in the gut, allowing the gut to heal over a period of time. The things you are allowed to eat in the diet are supposedly things that are completely digested in small intestine, so that none of the sugars are left over for the bacteria to feed on in the large intestine. My mother has been on this diet for about a year and it has greatly improved her digestion. Even she is skeptical of some of the components of the diet -- for example the types of beans allowed and not allowed on the diet seem subjective as do other many of the other things. She does feel that the diet is beneficial for her. As for he worms and the stringy things, I can't imagine they are related to the diet at all.On Sat, Oct 17, 2009 at 11:12 AM, Gemma R Locatelli <gemmalocat> wrote: Hello group, Has anyone tried the SCD? Guest guest
, I think you stated clearly that you didn't expect the diet to "cure" CD. I took your message to be simply that it can be helpful for some situations, such as yours after gall bladder surgery. I'm glad to hear it has benefited you.
