Guest guest
Hello group, Has anyone tried the SCD? I am going to start it. I also have a few friends who started it but I just heard one had a ton of worms come out in her stool. The other said they had some large bowel movements with weird stringy things in it. That is sort of freaking me out. thank you gem=) Gemma ' Locatelli CeliacDSG/ "Be the change you want to see in the world!" -Gandhi
Guest guest
I was on the SCD diet strictly for at least a year starting about three years ago after my gall bladder was taken out. I had been GF for a couple of years before that after my CD diagnosis. I was having so much problem with GI pain, nausea, bloating, cramping etc. after my gall bladder was removed that I was desperate to try anything. It's a challenging diet to follow to the letter of all the rules AND it was extremely helpful to me. I bought a couple of cookbooks besides the " Breaking the Vicious Cycle " book that helped with recipes for breads, and meals using almond flour only, no other grains. One is the " Grain Free Gourmet " by Jodi Bager and the other was " Eat Well, Feel Well " by Kendall Conrad. Both specifically follow the SCD plan in their recipes. This diet really helped heal my gut and improved my digestion. The main caveat is that you can really gain weight if you're not careful and eat too many yummy almond flour goodies. Almond flour is highly nutritious, low carb, high protein AND high calories, A little goes a long way. I also bought the " Yogourmet " yogurt maker she recommended and continue to make my own yogurt even though I am no longer on the diet. Making your own and letting it ferment for at least 24 hours really gets rid of most of the lactose, so I can eat this yogurt and even my lactose-intolerant husband can too. The only sweetener you can use on the SCD is honey and that's another one packed with calories and high glycemic index. This is different than recipes in the " Gluten-free Almond Flour " cookbook by Elena Amsterdam who uses only agave to sweeten. There are times when my gut starts really acting up on me that I consider trying it again, but I haven't been able to bring myself to start such a strict food plan again as of yet. Right now I'm trying to lose a few more pounds, and this diet definitely was a weight gainer for me! At the time I needed to gain weight because I had lost so much before the surgery from feeling so nauseated, so the diet was great for me then. I wish you the best of luck. It's definitely great for healing the gut! Goldbeck Santa Cruz
