I'm interested in the responses here, too. Thanks for posting this! I hope others have found a viable option they can share.

I've been pretty remiss in getting a real emergency kit together and wondered if anyone has found a good gluten free survival food solution. My son's preschool has an emergency kit for each child which contains a wheat based survival bar. (He has not been diagnosed celiac, so I'm OK with this for now). In a brief Google search tonight, I didn't find any GF survival bars. Alpine Aire foods offer some gluten free options, but they require water or cooking. Suggestions appreciated! -

Many GF "energy bars" are available. I favor the brand "KIND" because they aren't excessively sweet. Try a few until you hit on one that suits.

Try googling for energy bars instead of survival bars. A trip to any supermarket will show you a wide range but most are cloying to my taste.

Canned fruit and GF tuna fish and peanut butter go into our emergency kit.

I'm glad to hear that your son's school is addressing emergency kits.

I love Kind bars too (btw Starbucks carries them now), but they all have nuts and many preschools do not allow nuts if there are any kids in the school with allergies -- this is the case my son's preschool. Here is one idea, although they certainly take up more space than the dense emergency kit bars:

http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11472596Other GF bars I can think of are Tiger's Milk (again you probably couldn't get the peanut), Lara Bar, Jamfrakkas, Pure Fit -- there are a couple more a Trader Joe's I forget the names. Of course, getting your preschooler to eat any of them is another topic.

I just got some to see what they are all about -- all processed foods of course, and unfortunately the shelf life is not too great -- the ones we just got expire in December, so you would have to rotate on a regular basis.

There is a GF bar at Whole Foods called Can-Do Kids. My son is happy with these in his emergency kit (and eats them for snack all the time).MarciOn Sep 29, 2009, at 9:48 AM, Luther wrote:I love Kind bars too (btw Starbucks carries them now), but they all have nuts and many preschools do not allow nuts if there are any kids in the school with allergies -- this is the case my son's preschool. Here is one idea, although they certainly take up more space than the dense emergency kit bars:http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11472596Other GF bars I can think of are Tiger's Milk (again you probably couldn't get the peanut), Lara Bar, Jamfrakkas, Pure Fit -- there are a couple more a Trader Joe's I forget the names.
