Where do they live? I only ask because I have found that certain areas of the country have more options than we do in the Bay Area. And they may do local deliveries (???)

My elderly mother who is ill with a rare disease has an extreme sensitivity to gluten associated with the condition. After a recent illness from gluten, she has lost enough weight that her medical team is quite concerned. My father doesn't cook, and my mother can't cook so they rely on what my father buys at a grocery store (thus the error that caused the most recent problem). I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions for places I can mail order some food for them. I'm looking for high-calorie (think carbs and fat!), no chocolate products that are really good. My mom misses great bread and bread products. I'll cook for her when we visit at Christmas, but I need to get her some food before then and I don't know what's good. For this particular task, price is not important. Many thanks for any advice.Suzanne

Dallas, TX. I've looked around a bit (as best I can from afar), and I haven't found anything obvious...

A quick list of links for starters. More later when I

have time. Consider looking for a personal chef that specializes in GF (a

quick search didn’t find one in Dallas, but I didn’t spend much

time looking). Can you elaborate on the chocolate issue?

I've been ordering bread, breadcrumbs, etc. from Kinnikinnick for years. One of the reasons that I lke it is because they bake the bread fresh for your order. Then they ship it to you (2 day shipping). The instructions are to freeze upon receipt. They have quite a few selections...check out their website:

For whatever reason, my mother gets very sick after eating chocolate/caffeine....for chocolate it could be a gluten thing, I hired a GF chef for my mother two years ago, and it worked beautifully except for the fact that she felt I was spending too much money and would not let me continue....I begged...but she said my dad can take care of it...(think: mom doesn't want to be a burden). so what I really need to do is purchase something (or make it) and get it to her so she can't intervene or get upset about a person cooking for her...I had meals brought from a gluten free restaurant in Dallas that has since closed for awhile also...

A few suggestions:GFMall.com - has a huge list of stores, vendors, and products. Many stores and vendors ship.GlutenFreeMall.com - is an online store with a wide variety of products, including Thai Pavilion, Orgran, and Mrs. Leepers meals.GFJoes.com - is a small store in Tumwater, Wa, that now has mail order and is providing free FedEx Ground shipping through December 31. For great--well, passable--breads, review the messages in the forum's archive. There are a variety of opinions on tolerable to decent GF breads. Since there is a Whole Foods in the Highland Park suburb of Dallas, could a friend of your parents go there

to pick out GF breads and prepared meals for them? For support, there is a Lone Star Celiac Support Group in Dallas-Fort Worth with a Web site at: http://dfwceliac.orgBy the way, that site describes a local Thai restaurant as follows:Thai Basil (Dallas)9090 Skillman StreetDallas, TX 75243(214) 340-9261 Thai

Basil is a great, inexpensive, small family-run place in NE Dallas,

just inside 635 at Skillman. Almost every item on the menu is already

GF, and they will happily modify anything for you. And it tastes great!

I had my Triumph Dining Card with me, and they definitely appreciated

the Thai translation. You might join a national on-line group, like celiacsupport@, and ask your questions there.

Just out of curiousity, is your mother's rare disease another autoimmune disorder? Most of us are aware that developing one AD leaves us at greater risk of developing another, especially if the first one is untreated.

She has something called SCA6--spinal cerebellar ataxia 6...very common to have gluten sensitivity with it...it's a genetic neurodegenerative disease. she also had a constellation of generally mild auto-immune problems as she aged.SuzanneFrom: Harper

I'm sorry to hear it's not something simpler.

ADs do tend to crop up with age.

By this time, you probably are aware that the tendency to ADs is familial.

Best wishes.

Suzanne,

There are quite a few places that ship meals. They aren't cheap, and few are

national. I think this one is

http://www.gfmeals.com/Gluten-Free-Entrees-s/28.htm I know that there is one in

the Bay Area (I've forgotten the name) and another in Southern California that

I've heard about but a quick google search came up with the link above. Also,

you might want to check with the local senior center there to find out if there

are any meal delivery services that would be able to cater to special diets.

Lots of great food and they ship anywhere. Their Udi's white

sandwich bread tastes exactly like the soft white bread I used to eat

before giving up gluten. There's a whole grain version, too. This is my

sister-in-law's store -- she has celiac and only stocks products that she

loves, and finding the best bread products are her specialty. Call and

ask for Jean. Their entire inventory is not up on the website, but it

will give you a start.
