This looks like an interesting project. A review of the 2007 (latest available) IRS Form 990 (Attached tax form for not-for-profits) for the national, parent, not-for-profit Celiac Sprue Association shows that a very high percentage of the money taken in is spent on the goals of the organization.

A look, though, at the organization's CSA Peer Review Research Grant Program (http://www.csaceliacs.org/Research.php) does not show any evidence of the "Dipstick" project.

You do find a description of the project at the Affiliated American CSA Foundation, Inc. web site (http://www.aacsafoundation.org/index.php/celiac-projects/current-projects/csa-gluten-analysis-kit-for-home-use). This is apparently, considering some of the names involved, a subsidiary operation or function of CSA.

The following is from that web page:==============================Project "Dipstick"â„¢

$75,000 is needed.

Challenge: Celiacs can't determine before eating whether the food on their plate contains gluten.

Solution: Project “Dipstick.â€

Project “Dipstickâ€s goal is to develop a “tool†designed to provide

timely feedback to patients, manufacturers, caretakers, restaurant

personnel and all others responsible for the successful implementation

of the strict, medically-required, gluten-free lifestyle of celiac

patients.

Such a “tool†needs to be fast, portable, accurate, inexpensive,

reusable, easy to use, and indestructible. Such a “tool†would enable

celiacs and others to evaluate the gluten-status of food, especially

“foods ready to eat.â€

Unfortunately, there is no information on who is doing the research, even if it has commenced.

This sounds like an

interesting project to help us detect gluten in foods. I hope it works

out. I couldn’t figure out how to donate without actually going to

the store in Sacramento. I was thinking of just mailing them a check.

The store in Sacramento that is

organizing this sounds interesting too! I haven’t heard about it

before, but will have to keep it in mind next time we are in Sacto. Oddly

enough, their web site does not mention the store, it just appears to be mail

order, but I found a description of the store on Yelp: http://www.yelp. com/biz/gluten- free-specialty- sacramento

Celiac Research in Project “Dipstick†are

featured in today's article. Project “Dipstick†is shorthand for an effort to

develop a “tool†designed to provide feedback about gluten to patients,

manufacturers, caretakers, restaurant personnel and all others responsible for

the successful implementation of the strict, medically-required, gluten-free

lifestyle of celiac patients. Such a “tool†needs to be fast,

portable, accurate, inexpensive, reusable, easy to use, and indestructible. Read
