Guest guest
I don't have chest pains but I also don't have any "typical" gi-type reaction to gluten. However, I understand the physiological/medical implications of eating gluten, and so don't. I am sure that if I did keep eating gluten I would eventually have the "typical" reactions, and I know I would increase my risk of intestinal cancer. Maybe joining a support group or talking this over with your doctor or a nutritionist would help you stay on the gf diet. Or send an email to the listserv when you feel compelled to cheat - I bet a number of people would respond to cheer you on to keeping to the gf diet. Has your doctor had you tested for vitamin deficiencies and bone calcium levels? Might help to explain chest pains... Best of luck. It isn't easy to stay on a gf diet but it does gets easier. I only found out I had Celiac after a random blood test when I went to see my doctor for chest pains. I am an otherwise healthy, active, 29 year old woman so it seemed weird that I was having these chest pains and my doctor had another patient complain of chest pains who ended up testing positive for Celiac- so on a whim, she decided to test me. Besides these chest pains, my body does not react to gluten in anyway (which makes it hard to stay diligent with the diet). Does anyone else have a lack of symptoms OR anything resembling chest pains? Thanks for any input in advance, Best, le
Guest guest
le- I’ve never had chest pains as a reaction. However, to help you stay diligent on your diet, silent damage can be the worst kind. There are fellow Celiac stories where people who were never diagnosed, totally “fine” as in never felt bad but one day broke a leg from walking or another simple everyday task. Well, b/c they were damaging their small intestines (unbeknownst to themselves) their body was not absorbing nutrients, i.e. calcium in this case (each part of the intestine is responsible for absorbing different nutrients, and pending the area of damage, you could be lacking something) anyway, the patient developed Osteoporosis, that had gotten so bad their bones started to break. It was then they figured out they had Celiac Disease. I’m not trying to use the scare tactic on you…im just trying to help you realize how lucky you are that you know. It is really, really, really, very important to stick with the GF diet and be aware of all that is tied to it (cross contamination, eating out, future health effects of Osteo, Infertility or Cancer…3 huge things im sure you do not want to ever deal with). If you’re having issues and need a better understanding of the repercussions, please reach out to any of us. And based on where you live if you need support when eating out or talking to restaurants, im sure someone can help. One of the best things that helped me was going out to eat with a “veteran” celiac and learning all the right questions to ask, etc. What also helped was participating in a physical support group where we brought a potluck dish, recipe card and shared stories about living with CD. I hope your chest pains go away…maybe after truly becoming GF they will. - From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of le Niland Sent: Monday, September 21, 2009 1:25 PM Subject: [ ] No typical symptoms & chest pains Hello all, I was diagnosed with Celiac a few months ago however I have no typical symptoms at all. Guest guest
I had cardic symptoms (mostly tachicardia--a pounding heart, and the feeling of skipping a beat--not pain) that went away when I stopped eating gluten. I don't have celiac, just some sort of gluten intolerance, although I have the gene and my son has celiac.Marci From: le Niland <niland.danielle@...>Subject: [ ] No typical symptoms & chest pains Date: Monday, September 21, 2009, 1:24 PM Hello all, I was diagnosed with Celiac a few months ago however I have no typical symptoms at all. Guest guest
I had similar symptoms to Marci beginning in my mid-twenties; along with a lot of other non-typical symptoms. At 38 I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and sjogren's syndrome. The more typical intestinal symptoms didn't start until later. I went gluten-lite 2 years ago, then gluten free about 6 months ago. I am now 44. Heart symptoms and many of the others have resolved, and arthritis and sjogren's symptoms have improved. I never had celiac testing done before going gluten free, but I am DQ2 gene positive. I would recommend sticking with the diet, knowing that you are protecting yourself from many significant issues in the future. Guest guest
--that reminds me, I was also diagnosed with arthritis, Sjogren's syndrome, and Hashimoto's thyroiditis. And we know that autoimmune diseases are tied to celiac.Marci From: le Niland <niland.danielle@...>Subject: [ ] No typical symptoms & chest pains Date: Monday, September 21, 2009, 1:24 PM Hello all, I was diagnosed with Celiac a few months ago however I have no typical symptoms at all. Guest guest
Hi Marci Definitely stick with your gluten free diet!! As mentioned, it is VERY very common to have a cluster of auto immune disorders. Also, I hope you're on a good anti-inflammatory protocol to calm down your gut which is currently " on fire " . The recommended basic protocol includes probiotics, Vitamin D, glutamine, EPA/DHA and curcumin (turmeric). Let me know if you need guidance regarding therapeutic dosages of any of these. best of luck, Bonnie > > > From: le Niland <niland.danielle@...> > Subject: [ ] No typical symptoms & chest pains > > > Date: Monday, September 21, 2009, 1:24 PM > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hello all, > > I was diagnosed with Celiac a few months ago however I have no typical symptoms at all. Guest guest
Hi le, I would encourage you to get an endoscopy/biopsy. Blood tests are NOT diagnostic. Guest guest
Yes, I have had cardiac symptoms that seem to have resolved after 1 1/2 years on the GF diet. I was diagnosed with Mitral Valve Prolapse (basically a valve problem which results in the feeling of you heart 'skipping' a beat) 10 years ago. I hardly notice the skipped beats at all anymore. I also had a lot of problems with chest pain, and the feeling of pressure and tightness in my chest. My cardiologist ran a bunch of tests and found nothing -- he even tested me for ulcers because he said that ulcers can cause chest pain. Same goes for acid reflex (which a lot of Celiacs have). Again, these problems seem to have resolved after 1 1/2 years GF. I can't exactly say what the connection is, but it could be because of acid relux -- or I have also heard that iron deficiency can cause chest pain. A lot of Celiacs have vit/mineral deficiencies because of malabsorption. You are really lucky that your doctor was smart enough to test for Celiac! You should probably confirm it with a biopsy though before you embark on a life-long GF diet. And for the biopsy to show accurate results you can't yet be GF. Talk to your doctor about this. Hope this helps... > > --- In , le Niland <niland.danielle@> wrote: > > > > Hello all, > > > > I was diagnosed with Celiac a few months ago however I have no typical > > symptoms at all. Guest guest
I have had chest pains off and on my whole life. I had heart sugery in 81' and would say its not worth the heath side effects to dabble in Gluten ever. I am 32 and had no CD symptoms until I turned 29, I had started to feel more intense chest pais then dizy spells then extreme fatigue. My DR said it was stress. It did not stop until I had serious IBS problems crop up that had been happening off and on for nearly 10 years, but the fact the DR assured me always that I was fit as a fiddle and so on ..well I look back and yes I was active and busy but I was not healthy at all... It was just a matter of time before my system caved. And then it did. =/ I am now picking up the pieces. I feel better than I have in a long time but it also takes time to rebuild so I am happy to have so many educated people help me. =) I hope you feel amazing and dont have any problems and just get better. gem=)
