Guest guest
I'd like to add to the list the Kyo-Po Market, a Korean market that has taken over the old Cosentino's store at the corner of Lawrence Expressway and Homestead in Santa Clara. It seems to have a lot of good (GF) stuff as well, though it also takes a lot of label reading. Prices of the packaged products are quite good, and the prices of the fruits and vegetables are usually significantly less than the big chain grocery stores. It's off of De Anza and s Creek. I don't speak or read Mandarin, etc. but they have all sorts of good stuff in there. It can actually be a bit overwhelming. Plus, a lot of the packaging surprisingly has an ingredient list on the back, in English. You can literally spend hours in this store just reading the labels!! I might try their lavendar tea....it looks really calming, very medicinal and very purple! Never been to 99 Ranch. Where is it? I'm still somewhat new to CA so if that seemed like a silly question, well, you know why! :)AmiraOn Sat, Aug 22, 2009 at 7:07 PM, rooneys86 <rooneys86 (DOT) com> wrote: So I finally got around to going to 99 ranch in cupertino. I found some bean thread strips and soy sheets. They are like won ton rappers but made with soy beans. I cooked up some ground chicken, bean sprouts, mushrooms and some Chinese spices. Then filled the sheets up rolled them and fried them up. Then made some dipping sauce. I was in heaven. They came out great! I also found a lot of other cool looking pasta and stuff cant wait to try it all out! kc -- ~Amira
Guest guest
I shop at Marina Foods regularly for GF flours - some folks have mentioned they are concerned about cross contamination but I have not had any issues with it (yet) - but I could be just lucky. And the prices can't be beat. I think last time I paid 50 cents for a pound of tapioca flour (or maybe it was 1/2 a pound). I also buy white rice flour, sweet rice flour and they have some of the odder ones like cashew flour and arrowroot starch. I also pick up rice stick there. The one thing I keep meaning to look for are premade thick rice noodles - the kind they use for the dim sum which are thick noodles wrapped around shrimp -that used to be my favorite but I'm afraid to go to a dim sum place due to cross contamination and am sure the sauce is not gf - but it would be amazing if I could make my own. I also frequent the Indian markets to pick up spices, chickpea flour and tamarind sauce, although I've also heard warnings that the spices (which are super cheap) could be contaminated- but again I've been lucky so far - and I find I am pretty sensitive to gluten - just a crumb or a trace and I'm sick within a couple of hours and have brain fog/lethargy for a few days. But again, I may have just dodged a bullet so far by frequenting these places. Jean
