Guest guest
a, Out here in Az there is a great influx of flu in the hospitals...plus the lung thing is going around... I , too, got the Pneumovax last yr as did my son....and I do feel that has helped us too. I usually get every lung infection going around.....one year had it 3x cos kids kept it coming back into house... I will say I try to stay out of crowded public places and it does help. I know when I used to work a real job, we had to go to work if we could no matter what and I always got everything going around..plus I worked in buildings that had no fresh air (sick building)from outside so it was recirculated sick air...Hope everyone stays well ...Judy in AZ
Guest guest
Judy, When I go out in public, especially to a food store, I keep my gloves on. Everyone coughs into their hands and then touches everything, so I hope it helps keep me from getting it. It's great that the shot stopped you from getting pneumonia. I hope it continues to protect you and your son. a ----- Original Message ----- From: <JHend65291@...> < egroups> Sent: Friday, January 12, 2001 12:16 AM Subject: Re: [ ] flu shots > a, Out here in Az there is a great influx of flu in the hospitals...plus > the lung thing is going around... Guest guest
yeah, that if your immune system is compromised you can get pretty sick. I haven't met anyone yet with CML who had that happen, though. jennifer bosse wrote: > I did get one and was encouraged by my dr. to do so. Did they give you a reason why they strongly discourage it? Guest guest
Hi Kathy, When it comes to CML, I prefer to get my information and instructions from OHSU. Their advice is to get the flu shot. I would like to see documentation (i.e. scientific journal papers) from the health provider that says people on Gleevec should not get flu shots. Zavie [ ] flu shots How does everyone feel about CML and flu shots? I have been strongly discouraged from getting one and strongly advised to get one from various health care providers. Guest guest
Flu shots are given to increase the immune system, even those with compromised systems. Admittedly so, it can give cause for alarm but only in extreme cases. I've taken it since being diagnosed 5 years ago. Just an opinion.... Guest guest
Strongly in favor of taking. I have not missed since 1992 and have done well. dxd CML in 2003 and doctors I see recommend it highly. Red Cross nurse that gave me my flu shot the last two years has me me on her must take list because of heart and CML and my wife & daughter work in day care with babies less that six months old. Today at the VA Cancer clinic where I get my meds was giving flu shots to any patient that had not had theirs (Darn missed a free one). Guest guest
This is, yet again, a situation where everyone is different. I am TERRIFIED of getting the flu. Positively TERRIFIED. I am NOT ALLOWED to get the flu shot ever again. I tested positive for sensitivity to chicken eggs. It was an incredibly minor sensitity, but it was positive. I only had the flu once in my life, and I thought I was going to die as well. I've never been so scared. I've made it through the last 2 flu seasons safely, every member of my household gets a flu shot... but I can't. I asked that since I get Xolair could I TRY it because I've gotten it every other year... I've been told no. I don't know what to do. I can't think of anything so scary as the possibility of getting the flu. All I can do is hope that it just doesn't happen to me. I'm really glad that so many of you can. And I'm not being sarcastic about that, I'm so glad that it's one thing that so many of you don't have to worry about on top of all the stuff you DO have to worry about, you know? God Bless and good luck Ron. I hope the flu passes you by from now on! Thank Goodness you've changed your mind about getting that shot! ~ -------Original Message------- From: ronaldcrpntr Date: 11/13/06 20:13:46 Subject: [ ] Flu Shots In the past, I would do whatever I needed to do to get out of getting the flu shot. Last February I spent 9 days in intensive care with influenza, Pneumonia (yes I had the shot), and then asthma related stuff. My pulmo told me that if I had not had my flu shot I would have died. He would not have been able to save me. Needless to say, the day the flu shot is offered, I am there, no excuses. This episode kind of changed my priorities a little bit. Guest guest
I agree, each of our systems are different and we should consult with our Dr at each level of treatment. I was just sharing, that for me, the flu shot is of paramount importance in my overall care and that conclusion came after a life threatening situation. I have been on Xolair for 1 1/2 years and the realization that my Dr still oversees my asthma with a multifaceted approach requires my cooperation, especially since I have a history of contempt for the medical profession. Guest guest
I would take the flu shot if I had not had such a bad reaction to it last year. I think I have already had the flu over the past few weeks. I am taking a gamble on taking xolair but I am miserable really miserable. did anyone else feel this bad? wheezing and sob but usually mine go away by the time I get to the doctor. make that used to but not anymore. Guest guest
Hi there, I'm planning on getting the seasonal flu shot this year. I'm also wondering about the H1N1 shot. I don't seem to be in the category of people who should get the shot, except that people with immune system problems are encouraged to get it. I'm pretty healthy and have been gluten free since I was diagnosed with CD nearly 5 years ago. So I don't know if I would qualify as having a compromised immune system. So, I'm wondering if anyone has discussed this with their doctor? My first thought is that I'm not a candidate for H1N1, but again I was curious if anyone has explored this topic. thanks, p.s. I'm not concerned with all of the controversies surrounding vaccines in general, etc.
Guest guest
Flu shots Karine, We get pneumonia shots every 5 years, but that is separate from the flu shots. This year, there will be 3 vaccines in 1 shot for the annual flu shot. Some people in the group are complaining that they got sick for a day and some 3 days. I wrote the original post saying that we had to make a decision about whether we were going to get the shot. Some people get it and others do not because of the ingredients like mercury being used. Last year, it was said that individual shots did not have he mercury, only the large bottles that they refilled after giving them to a large group, like a school. That is what I remember from last year. If someone has more recent information they can post it here and every one can make up their own minds about what is best for them. This is a personal decision everyone has to make for themselves after speaking to their doctors. This is a website with a strong warning about who should get the FLU MIST ( there are people with certain conditions who should definitely not take this, so read up about this nasal mist vaccine before you take it. You should not get FluMist if you: are allergic to eggs, gentamicin, gelatin, or arginine; have ever had a life-threatening reaction to influenza vaccinations; or are 2 through 17 years old and take aspirin or medicines containing aspirin. http://www.flumist.com/?dbsrc=mi-flum-eng-IPick-nnn-unbrned-insem-nnn & WT.sr\ ch=1 & WT.mc_id=1115 http://www.health.state.ny.us/diseases/communicable/influenza/flumist.htm ______________________________ These are some of the agents that may be in your flu shots and see if you still want to take a flu shot.
