Guest guest
Niamh, we're glad to hear from you. I'm sure you'll enjoy your visit. Be sure to bring rain protection; we have no rain at all in the summer, but we make up for it in the winter -- if we're lucky. You say you'll be staying in the central tourist area in San Francisco. Can you be more specific? In San Francisco, Whole Foods stores (several), and Real Foods stores (two), Rainbow groceries, and others carry GF breads. If you can give us a location, we can give you suitable choices. Perhaps others here can discuss restaurants and the GF map site. We look forward to hearing from you again. H. Guest guest
In Palo Alto, there is a Whole Food on Emerson Street. downtown and one on El Camino in Los Altos (5 minutes away). Additionally, Country Sun Market on California Avenue has a wide selection. From a restaurant perspective, I love http://www.yelp.com/biz/the-oaxacan-kitchen-palo-alto Oaxacan Kitchen (just off of California Avenue). They have their GF items marked on the menu and the food is wonderful. On Fri, Jan 15, 2010 at 11:41 AM, Harper <flatcat9@...> wrote: Niamh, we're glad to hear from you. Guest guest
Hi Niamh, I live in SF and can recommend a few stops for you. I second Harper's recommendation of Mariposa's kiosk in the Ferry Building. It is within walking distance from SF's central tourist area (I assume you mean Union Square). It is on the Embarcadero at Market Street and has great fresh items as well as frozen. Bread, cookies, muffins, etc. If you are there on a Saturday before 2pm the Farmer's market has wonderful fresh fruit, and samples! Also, I recommend Ozumo for sushi - also on Embarcadero, nearby. It's somewhat expensive but nice. Zadin in the Castro is a Thai place that has a GF menu, Cafe Gratitude in SOMA/Mission District is vegan and nearly entirely GF. The Daily Grill in Union Square has a GF menu but I have never been so I can't really recommend. I have eaten fish safely at Terzo in the Marina. There are a few Whole Foods Markets in the city, all of which have gluten free bread, cereal, frozen dinners, etc. Udi's brand of frozen bread is new and particularly good. I spend a lot of time at Whole Foods! San Francisco is surprisingly lacking in safe GF restaurants. Enjoy your time here! -----Original Message-----From: niamhosullivandubli n <niamhosullivandubli n@...> Sent: Fri, Jan 15, 2010 4:00 amSubject: [ ] suitable restaurants in down town San francisco and Pau Alto and Santa Hi,I am an Irish lady travelling to San Francisco, Pao Alto, and Santa in the next few weeks.I will be staying in the following areas and was wondering if you are aware of any shops that sell GF bread/ cereal/ crackers and restaurants that are safe to eat in in these areas ?1. Guest guest
Hi Niamh, We live in Palo Alto and our daughter is celiac. We’ve tried a few restaurants and many stores with good results: Siam Royal on University – this is Thai food. (They don’t know the term celiac, but tell them you can’t have wheat and they will tell you which dishes are fine. They understand about soy sauce). PF Chang’s at Stanford Mall – they have a GF menu (note that most places here know the words gluten-free, but most do not know the word celiac). Just be careful that you double-check that you get the right order when it arrives, esp if you are with a large group. Most Mexican restaurants. We’ve eaten at Palo Alto Sol (on California Ave.) and some very sensitive celiac friends have eaten at Andale (University). Just avoid the flour tortillas. The Counter – a burger place. Just get it without the bun. (California Ave.) In n Out -- a fast food burger place. Order it protein-style and it comes wrapped in a lettuce leaf. The fries are safe too. St. ’s Alley – a nicer restaurant. Near downtown Palo Alto across from Homer Ave (Ramona St.?). But call ahead to let them know you’re coming rather than waiting until you get there – they request some time to prepare, but they are happy to do it. They have a nice (but usually crowded) Sunday brunch as well as nice lunches and dinners. It’s easier for them to accommodate you at lunch or dinner but they can handle brunch if you like eggs. Amici’s – (Menlo Park on Santa Cruz Ave) pizza place with an entire GF menu which includes quite a large list of choices for pizza and salads. It’s great pizza too. As far as shops, no problem: Whole Foods (Homer St.) Trader Joe’s (TJ’s) (in Town and Country, which is at El Camino and Embarcadero) Safeway (on Middlefield Rd in PA or on El Camino in Menlo Park) Piazza’s (Middlefield at ton) The Country Sun (California Ave in PA) Good crackers: Crunchmaster’s, sold in small bags at Safeway; and the rice crackers at TJ’s. Good bread – that’s a tougher one, but some do like Udi’s. My daughter prefers us to make it from a mix, which you might find in stores – The Gluten Free Gourmet’s French bread and pizza mix. Cereal – All of the Chex cereals are now GF and say so on the front of the box. If you can tolerate oats, you can also buy GF oats, but don’t eat any which are not labeled GF – they may be contaminated with wheat. You can also buy bags of GF hot cereal mix by Bob’s Red Mill which is very good. Don’t trust any cereal not labeled GF as they often use barley malt to sweeten it – like Rice Krispies. But if you like those, you can buy Crisped Rice cereal made by Erewhon which is GF. We hope you enjoy your visit! My husband is from Ireland as well, and we visit often. It is easier for celiacs there, but getting much better here too. Guest guest
San Francisco: Kennedy’s in North Beach serves Indian food. Most of the stuff is safe except for the tandoori stuff and any seafood and the “rolls”. Obviously you don’t want the naan either. No samosas. I’m pretty sure everything Do not get anything deep fried as the fryer is not dedicated. Don’t order off the “bar menu” as pretty much everything there is deep fried. They also serve Green’s Gluten Free Beer! I eat here ALL the time! Ike’s Place (in the Mission) serves GF sandwiches & they are aware of CC issues. I have not eaten at that particular location, but I ate at the one in Redwood City with no problem. Fisherman’s Wharf: Bubba Gumps & The Rainforest Café. I personally have never eaten GF at Bubba’s, but that is because I will go into anaphylactic shock if I eat shrimp, and, I think, there only GF options were shrimp. I haven’t been to The Rainforest Café since 2005, but they accommodated me back then & I was happy. The GF options *were* limited, but I actually considered that a blessing since they have such an extensive menu & I would have had a hard time making up my mind otherwise. BTW, Rainforest is a PERFECT place to take kids, as the whole thing looks like a tropical rainforest, complete with animatronic animals! Union Square: The Irish Bank. I have eaten there a few times. They are really good about checking. It’s a pub with sports playing on TV, but I would totally take my kid there. Cal Academy: Believe it or not, they have GF options! Yes, really. I was shocked. My husband went into the food area to get himself something to eat, and came back with spring rolls for me. I asked if he was SURE they were GF. He said yes, one of the employees had pointed to a section of food and said everything there was GF! I couch this information is these terms because I did not verify it with my own eyes. I did, however, scarf the spring rolls, which were SUPER yummy, and I did not get sick afterwards, so that, at least *is* GF… As for sushi, if you want sushi, go to Minako, in the Mission. They use mostly organic ingredients, and they have a bunch of wheat-free options. (They list them as “wheat-free”, but I can vouch they are actually GF). Yes, you can have GF TEMPURA! The owner is a friend of mine, so she really gets the whole GF thing. They are very kid friendly. In fact, the menus have a bunch of kids drawings inserted into them! Oh, and, no need to bring your own soy sauce – they have it there! Thirsty Bear is supposed to have some GF options, and they are a block & a half from the convention center. When in SF I always recommend Zadin – Vietnamese food. It is my favorite restaurant with GF options clearly marked and they also have GF desserts! Hope you are able to try it. Zuni Café (Market Street) is GF friendly. Call ahead for reservations. Alive! on Lombard Street is a raw foods place where most stuff is GF. You mostly have to watch out for the soy sauce. I like it MUCH better than Café Gratitude in the Mission (another raw foods place, which would also be a great place to go). Alive! isn’t quite as hippy-dippy as Gratitude. Amici’s Pizza (on Lombard) has GF pizza & GF beer. Trader Joe’s sells GF stuff. Locations all over the city, but the two that will probably closest are in North Beach & South of Market. There are also three Whole Foods in the city. I live in the city and know it really well. If you need more specific info than that, let me know. If you have an itinerary of where you would like to go/what you would like to see in the city, I’d be happy to type you up a list with more specifics. Plus, if I have a more specific idea of where you will be it might jog more places you can go from my memory, these places are what I thought of off the top of my head. You can feel free to email me off list if you would like more itinerary-specific info. Mommymacgyver at Comcast dot net.
