Guest guest
Hi, I have not had that happen, but I've heard that eating unwashed quinoa can do that. Did you wash it thoroughly, with about 3-4 changes of water before you cooked it? Apparently quinoa has a detergent-like substance on it that can cause diarrhea if ingested. It washes out pretty easily. I'm always extra careful with the washing and have never had this problem with the quinoa. - From: Melita <leftcoastmelita@...> Sent: Wednesday, July 22, 2009 2:21:03 PMSubject: [ ] quinoa question- high gross level ok just warning you on this one.majorly grossHas anyone made quinoa, ate it, and then got the worst case of diarrhea on the planet?I can't believe that this is what is causing it....but I think it has to be.Maybe it was too much fiber for me. Guest guest
Yes, this happened to my husband & I (we are both gluten-sensitive) and it was so dramatic that we thought we had a bad batch of quinoa or something. But...come to find out, that as an earlier post mentioned, soaking and rinsing is crucial to removing the soapy coating which acts as a laxative. We had soaked & rinsed the quinoa, but apparently not well enough. I also wonder about the possibility of gluten-sensitive people being sensitive to quinoa in some cases. I haven't re-tested by eating quinoa again after the last incident, but I would consider this as a possibility. --Lynn > > ok just warning you on this one. > > majorly gross > > > Has anyone made quinoa, ate it, and then got the worst case of diarrhea on the planet? > > I can't believe that this is what is causing it....but I think it has to be. > > Maybe it was too much fiber for me.
