Guest guest
Dear Debbie, Wow, and Congrats! Will be interesting to hear what Dr. Small says about all this. If you have to have a c-section, and can't have an epidural, they can do it under a general, I have had that done twice, and both kids and I came out fine. You just loose that birth moment. If they have to go that way, you'll have to rely on your hubby to relay what the birth was like, but afterall it's about having a baby as safely as possible. I had my kids pre revision, but my Harrington kept them from giving me an epidural try as they may. So just look to the joy in this, you might need some bed rest, maybe not, and a c-section and maybe a general, but a baby is pure joy and love, what could be better, nothing! [ ] Oh my gosh..I'm pregnant!!! I haven't written in a while, but I just wanted to update everybody...My big 12 hour revision was last July 9th (07) here in Tampa with Dr. Small - and shock of all shocks - we found out that my husband and I are pregnant with our 4th child (we have 3 boys - Micah -13, -10 and -7) This was NOT planned and a complete surprise..I guess we weren't very "responsible" last month (ha ha) I am doing GREAT with my back, but of course I am a little concerned....I go to see Dr. Small on Thurs. and I will tell him the news. I guess since I got "my swerve in my curve" back Glenn can't stay away from me - ha ha ha- I think my biggest worry is my pelvis - I wonder if I will be able to deliver vaginally or if I will need a C section. I also wonder if I can get an epidural with my 20 screws and 4 rods in there...guess we'll find out.We are still in shock - but getting excited! Anybody experienced with pregnancy after a surgery as big as this one year out?Debbie Warren (Tampa)
Guest guest
Wow, congratulations, Debbie. I'm sure it's crossed your mind this is your chance to have a girl! When I was in pre-surgical discussion, Dr. Rand said that he planned to leave an opening down the middle of my L5-S1 joint that would be plenty big enough to have a myelogram if necessary. Whether that level would be a good place to put an epidural I don't know, but in my case it's moot since I'm either menopausal or very close to it. But at any rate, Dr. Small should be able to tell you how feasible an epidural will be. Guest guest
Debbie, Well that is some surprising news. I think you are a " first " for the group in terms of being so close to your revision....but our one and only Titch did manage to have a gorgeous little boy last year. I am sure she will recount some of her experiences for you. I will be interested to hear what DrSmall says. I am guesiing you will just have to keep an eye on your own calcium and hope that your delivery goes easy. Did you have a C-section for the other 3? If not, I bet you will be just fine....epidural or not. So other than that...how are you doing...(now that we know WHAT you are doing...!!!) Take Care, Cam > > I haven't written in a while, but I just wanted to update > everybody...My big 12 hour revision was last July 9th (07) here in > Tampa with Dr. Small - and shock of all shocks - we found out that my > husband and I are pregnant with our 4th child (we have 3 boys - Micah - > 13, -10 and -7) This was NOT planned and a complete > surprise..I guess we weren't very " responsible " last month (ha ha) I am > doing GREAT with my back, but of course I am a little concerned....I go > to see Dr. Small on Thurs. and I will tell him the news. Guest guest
Congratulations Debbie! I have not been " revised " yet but when I had my son (C-section) they tried a spinal but couldn't get in. I ended up having to have general anesthesia. Since then, I have had one steroid epidural for pain management and they got in there beautifully with fluoroscopy. I'm not sure if you can have fluoroscopy while pregnant but it's worth asking about. Good luck! Guest guest
Congrats Debbie! I wish you the best My uneducated guess is that an epidural is not very likely with your highly fused spine. In fact, both of my kids were pre-revision (I'm one year out too - yay!) and I chose not to have an epidural with either one. I didn't trust a doc to find the right spot since I was fused to L4 with significant curves still So my first was without drugs, and my second was with a dose of IV narcotics an hour or two before she was born. I just don't know if your pelvis will " give " enough during labor to push out the baby, or if it's fixed in place too much. Perhaps a c-section might be a better option. I belong to a couple of disabled parents lists. There are women on there who have given birth who have cerebral palsy, spinal bifida, osteogenesis imperfecta, and other disabling conditions. So quite a few women with several spinal problems have given birth before, though I have no idea if any of them had recently undergone any sort of fusion surgery. It will just take some careful planning with your OB to ensure that things go as smoothly as possible. How exciting for you guys Don't forget to give yourself plenty of rest. Pregnancy is tiring enough, and with your still-healing spine you don't want to push things too much. Best of luck with it! Please keep us updated on how everything is going for you! > > I haven't written in a while, but I just wanted to update > everybody...My big 12 hour revision was last July 9th (07) here in > Tampa with Dr. Guest guest
ha ha ha - I'm doing really pretty good. My hips/pelvis are achy especially at night or after sitting (since my surgery last July) My back really doesn't hurt. I was starting to walk 2 miles a day a couple of months before this month - so I guess I will continue to try and stay active because I KNOW I can't gain much weight with this pregnancy because of my back and because I am bigger than I wanted to be for this to happen. I have never had a C section and have always used an epidural - so I will find out today all of those answers from Dr. Small. Will be a new " experience " for me... hhhmmmmm I'll let you guys! Thanks for all the congrats (Still in shock) Debbie Warren (Tampa) > > > > I haven't written in a while, but I just wanted to update > > everybody...My big 12 hour revision was last July 9th (07) here in > > Tampa with Dr. Small - and shock of all shocks - we found out that > my > > husband and I are pregnant with our 4th child (we have 3 boys - > Micah - > > 13, -10 and -7) This was NOT planned and a complete > > surprise..I guess we weren't very " responsible " last month (ha ha) > I am > > doing GREAT with my back, but of course I am a little > concerned....I go > > to see Dr. Small on Thurs. and I will tell him the news.
