Dear Vallerie, I have the same problems being upright at the end of a

day on my feet My upper back aches & gets so very tired that I must

make a conscious effort to stay erect, if not I find myself leaning

fwd. Unlike before though I can straighten up by locking my knees &

making a conscious effort. It looks kind of funny to me I must say

as my whole body looks like it is leaning backward. I don't know if

you can picture it from the way I tried to describe it. I bet you

told Dr Glasser a resounding no!!! I would have told him the same

thing.

So happy to hear your fusion is solid & you have the go ahead to

resume your activities. I must make an appointment to get bk to Dr

Boachie. I was due to go bk in Jan but had to cancel.

Congratulations again on a good report,

Great News , It really helps to hear it!! Ken.redmarmie <vclark@...> wrote: Hi all,I saw Dr. Glazer yesterday in that crazy snow storm in Boston. The fusion is absolutely solid. talked about my shift to the left a bit and the difficulty of being upright especially when I am tired. He OFFERED to do more surgery. He explained osteotomies in the thoracic region may alleviate some of these symptoms. He also said it was just as evasive as the last surgery. I gave him a resounding NO thanks, I am fine just the way I am. He smiled, I thought you would say that. Anyway, I see him in a year as the neuropathy is still present and if it gets worse I am to call him. He also thought there was hope for the neuropathy as the therapist was getting some results.

Diane,

I know the constant stretches and bouts at the pool are the only things

keeping me limber otherwise I would climb right back down to my

old " muscle memory " position from pre revision days. I have to

constantly work at it. A small price to pay I guess.

Thanks Ken, Yes, there really is light at the end of the tunnel, though

I think the journey is never over in our life time.

Hi , I think a poool is a great idea for me also. Unforunately

I live in NE PA & since I moved I have not been abel to locate an

indoor pool. Swimming outside in the winter is definitely out of the

question for me !! ( just teasing ) I know I should ck out where is

the closest YMCA & I also should call the local area high schools to

see if any of them have an indoor pool. Glad it is helping you so

much. Thanx for the reminder.

Take Care,

Diane B

Diane,

In addition to checking out local high schools, there may be indoor

pool access available to you through a local hospital (if they have

a built-in rehab center), or through an outpatient physical

therapy/rehab center. You would likely need a doctor's rx to use a

pool at those places, but it may be a good option if you don't have

a Y close by. Also, if you check out a hotel with an indoor pool

and talk to their manager, they may figure out some sort of fee-for-

use program for you. I hope you can find someplace nearby!

Do you have any community colleges nearby? I accidentally discovered

that my local community college is by far the most economical indoor

pool -- for $35 I can do water aerobics twice per week and open swim

four times per week for 16 weeks!! What a bargain!

,

Happy one year anniversary! It's a big one..and it sounds like you have

done very well. I think it is good to hope you still get some relief

from the neuropathy..it will keep you working on it. I found the

progress still very noticable even in this past year. Now that you know

you have a solid fusion you will feel more confident about doing all

kinds of things. For me, there was still a slow strenghening everywhere

this last year.

As to more surgery...ye gads...not now....you can always opt for more

later if you want to, but I am sure you have plenty of time to make

that call.

Congrats,

Cam

,

Wow, a year under your belt, healing well, that's just great! Such a Milestone! I love that they will be following you for twenty years, what a wealth of info they will have compiled by then. Makes you wish they had done that following our Harrington Rod surgeries!

Hopefully as the years tick away, your results will continue, I'll hit my six year mark in December, and I'm ever thankful for my revision.

Colorado Springs

[ ] one year checkup

My revision surgeries were 7/16 and 7/23 of last year. How time flies! I had my 1 year postop check this week at Northwestern, and Dr. Koski said that everything looks wonderful on my x-rays. The alignment of neck over pelvis is still really good, the fusion is solidying beautifully, and all hardware is nicely implanted right where they had put it.He would like to see me in another year, and then again at 5 years post-op. And if I need anything sooner, all I have to do is call. I did ask for my most recent xrays on CD again, just so I can compare what my freshly fused spine looks like compared to my year-old fused spine. I haven't gotten a chance to look at it yet, but I hope I can see the differences myself :)A few things that I discussed with the doctor included my physical therapy restrictions - basically no restrictions now, with common sense (i.e. if it hurts or if I have to push things too much then don't do it!). Also, I was concerned about the fact that sometimes I will lean forward to pick things up by my feet when I'm sitting in my wheelchair (he said okay to do if necessary, but don't push it). And I've been having some hip pain in my right hip when I stand or try to walk. When I pointed to where it was at, he agreed that it was definately in my hip, and not back by the iliac screws or lower back. It's just something that we'll keep an eye on for now. He didn't have any real answers as to why I might be having it though. Also, my bowel issues likely won't improve since they've been present now for a year - sigh. On another note, his wonderful nurse Kathy left a couple of months ago to pursue her PA so that she can actually assist in surgeries. He has a new nurse named who seems very helpful. I also got to complete my "one year" paperwork for the Adult Spinal Deformities study that they are doing. I started it last year right after my revision, and they are hoping to follow people for 20 years after their surgeries to observe longterm outcomes and patient satisfactions.

Hi ,

So glad to hear that you had such a good check-up at your one year mark! Also, I think it's terrific that your doc is doing a 20 year follow-up study. Is it just him or is this a multi-hospital study? Just curious.

You sound like you are doing pretty well in general. I hope I'm reading between the lines correctly!
