Guest guest
Hey there, I wanted to report on a restaurant that you might not know about. It's called Spice Monkey and it's in downtown Oakland. The menu is really ecclectic, and several items on the menu are listed as gluten free. And they serve Redbridge beer! The situation is not perfect, however. Celiacs and gf types should still ask questions, etc. For example, a dish with buckwheat noodles is listed as gluten free. I spoke with the owner and she said that she realized after she had the menu printed up that the buckwheat noodles had wheat in them. She said she would remind her staff that that item wasn't safe for those who can't eat gluten. That said, there appear to be several safe items on the menu. I have been there twice and found the food to be yummy and didn't feel sick afterwards. The owner was very nice and attentive and accomodating. The space is cool, too -- the restaurant is in an old tile manufacturer building so there are lots of tiles. And a fountain. Here's the web site, which has the menu: http://www.spicemonkeycafe.com/ enjoy,
