Guest guest
I had some McCann's Irish oatmeal today, and oh boy, did I get glutened. I thought they were supposed to be safe, but I guess not. Anyone else have experience with McCann's? Lori
Guest guest
This is what their website says: Are McCann's Oat products gluten free? All McCann’s oat products are processed in a dedicated oatmeal mill that handles only oatmeal. In the supply chain between farm and mill, there is a possible cross contamination with other grains, such as wheat and barley but we reckon that the level of non-oat grains to be less than 0.05%. Cleaning equipment within the milling process would remove the vast majority of these grains along with other elements such as stones, straw etc. But we cannot guarantee that McCann’s oats are totally gluten free and we recommend that consumers use their own judgement as to whether they wish to use our oatmeal or not. Many celiacs can tolerate our oatmeal products without any adverse effect but they may not suit those who are particularly sensitive. http://www.mccanns.ie/pages/faq.html Do you react to other oatmeals as well, or is this your first try? Guest guest
I used to be a patient of Dr. Aron's, whom a few people have sort of raved about here. My experience with him was not entirely great, but anyway he had told me that oats have a certain length of the offensive polypeptide protein chain in common with wheat, barley, and rye. He said it is much shorter and that's why people have hypothesized that it's tolerated by some gluten-sensitive patients. " GF oats " is a new concept to me and I bet a misnomer in the sense that most or all grains have glutens or protein complexes called gliadins (corn and rice for sure). Just so happens most of us are allergic to wheat, barley and rye, and oats perhaps? Guest guest
Dr. Greene said something similar at the 2006 Celiac Conference. 20% of all celiacs have " a celiac like response to even gluten-free oats " . I am of the mind like you, Naren, which is why I had asked if there was any research on whether " refractory sprue " was simply the inability to tolerate OTHER grains, as well as the " gluten " grains. My own personal thoughts? I think CD is our body's way of saying " DON'T EAT GRAINS! " I personally eat almost none, and it works great for me! BTW, Dr. Greene posted a slide of the grain continuum (my words, not his), oats were right next to wheat/barley/rye. -----Original Message----- From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Naren Wadhwani Sent: Saturday, September 05, 2009 9:30 PM Subject: Re: [ ] glutened I used to be a patient of Dr. Aron's, whom a few people have sort of raved about here. My experience with him was not entirely great, neither was mine. I think he's a disorganized quack. He confused me with another patient more than once, reading off the wrong chart. Even though I've ALWAYS had to wait way past my appointment time with him, he reprimanded _me_ for being late to an appointment, when in fact I was on time and his receptionist never told him I was there. Or maybe she did and he forgot. He never sent my records on to my GP, even though I asked him to. And he gave me twice the normal dosage of demerol during the biopsy, which induced a psychotic reaction. I would NEVER go back to him.
