I've noticed that most of Trader Joes products which say gluten free on them also say "Produced in a facility with wheat products" so I went from excited and putting them into my cart when I saw the "gluten free" to afraid to try any and put them back on shelf when I noticed about the wheat. (That was right after I was diagnosed.) Do people on this list feel they are safe? Or only safe for people who are okay with small amounts of wheat - which I suppose would disqualify all celiacs :-( Its confusing.

Has anyone had experience with Trader Joe’s frozen Tamales (chicken, beef, and green chilies)? The package says “produced in a facility with wheat products.” I’m interested to know if anyone has tried them and had or not had a reaction.

Thanks,

Pam

My understanding is that it's a legal disclaimer that they have to write because the food is not prepared in a dedicated facility. That said, right on the labels it says "our vendors follow good manufacturing practices to segregate ingredients to avoid cross contamination." Me and my gluten free friends do not have any problems.LynnOn Dec 2, 2009, at 4:28 PM, Dany wrote: I've noticed that most of Trader Joes products which say gluten free on them also say "Produced in a facility with wheat products" so I went from excited and putting them into my cart when I saw the "gluten free" to afraid to try any and put them back on shelf when I noticed about the wheat. I feel comfortable buying foods that say they are "produced in a facility that also manufactures wheat products" but not ones that say they are "produced on equipment that also processes wheat." Maybe this distinction is artificial, -- if it is I'd like to know so I can expand what I'll buy! And of course when eating in a restaurant I just accept that something in my gf food may have been "produced on equipment, in a facility, etc etc with wheat."

But I know what Dany means by "going from excited to afraid" because I also had heard how great TJs is for gf food and was disappointed their gf foods aren't produced in a gf dedicated facility... Something to hope for!

If a company is rigorously following good segregation policies, then I think there are likely to be few problems for those not extremely sensitive. On the other hand, because W/B/R/O gluten has such a profound (and dangerous) impact on my wife, we don't buy anything if there is a mixed use facility, even with the disclaimer. Everybody has to make their own best judgment, be sensitive to their bodys's responses, and periodically get their doctor to have their blood tested. For a while, I too was eating TJ's food that was gluten-free but processed on shared equipment - until I started getting sick from it. I can't get myself to go back. Now, I never buy TJ's products that have the disclaimer about shared equipment. Maybe shared facility might be ok, but who knows.

The product that got me sick was the canned chicken and canned turkey. I used to eat it all the time and use for things like chicken salad, or in casseroles, etc. Then one day, not long after the "processed on shared...: showed up on the can it started making me sick. Have not gone back to it to try it again.

I eat the beef ones all the time, no problem. I can't eat the others because

they have dairy :^(
