Neck Surgery

I would like to talk to anyone that has had or has to have disc

fusion surgery in their neck. I have to have some of the discs in my

neck fused and I am very nervous about it.

I had a c5/6 fusion in August of last year. Don't be nervous !

Compared to my lumbar fusion this was a walk in the park.

I was back and in good shape within 2 weeks, ready to go.

I woke up from the surgery feeling feisty and ready to leave the

hospital.

Where you from ?

Hi Dave I had a double fusion from c5 too c7 in march of last year

with no hardwear in my neck. Meaning I opted for no screws and rods

placed in there. It takes longer for the fusion too heal, they told

me 6 months and I had too wear a neck collar for 2 months but it was

well worth it. I've heard too many horror stories of rods and screws

in fusions although I know there are times they have too be used. The

biggest differce is healing time, without them your neck is like

blocks stacked up, one tumble and they all fall down, thats how my

surgeon explained it. In other words he told me " DON't Fall down till

its fused and solid " but it was pretty much a breeze it hurt but not

alot, they went thru the front of my neck so it heals fast. you can't

even see the scar now and I have little pain there. It still hurts

from time too time but I have learned how too be more careful about

things I do that I know will make it hurt. Before my fusioin it hurt

too even hold up my head, I had alot of nerve pain in my neck. I hope

you have good news from your dr this week, if you want to know

anything else just let me know. Good luck Sharon

Dear Lorraine,

I'm not sure but it sounds like you are dealing with a first time surgery, but our members are dealing with a reoccurance of symptoms from a past surgery we had for Scoliosis with Harrington Rod instrumentation. Some here have had to deal with neck problems, maybe they will chime in on what you are facing. Most of us have dealt with lumbar and thorasic problems because of our scoliosis, and mainly that is what our group deals with. I know the prospect of surgery is scary, and when it's in a area like the neck that has such movement the idea of fusion there is scary. Not having insurance is an added battle. Hopefully you can get to the Neuro doc and at least see if surgery would help your symptoms. Lately there has been some talk in the group about neck issues, so go back through the old messages. Wish I had some help for you, but my problems were further down the spine. Good luck and let us know how your visit with the neuro doc comes out.

Hey everybody..just ran across this group..I have been dealing with pain in my neck and back for several years now..MRI shows degenative disks in my neck C 5 C6 and C7..I get pain, tingling, numbness all in my left side..the arm, shoulder and shoulder blade, fingers, now in my jaw, lips, tounge at times and sometimes in the front area of my throat when I've over done it..I've tried everything coming and going to help, doc wants me to see a nero but no insurance limits me to what I can do..and from doing some research on line and talking to some people who\ve had the surgery to remove bone from your hip and replace it in their neck I'm not sure I want it done...don't know which is worse the pain before or dealing with everything after....only two people I've talked with says it has helped them......So what to do is the question...any advice?

Loraine,

You weren't clear whether your symptoms were secondary to initial

Harrington Rod surgery. In my case, my symptoms and inability to

heal were caused because my spine lacks the ability to compensate

and absorb shock (and are in addition to thoracis and lumbar issues

that most of us face). The inability to compensate relates back to

my initial fusion - discs and natural spinal curves do that job.

Look at my post from last night and the post that I replied to for

some info on what might help - with or without previous fusion

surgery. Also, if you are near Eastern PA, I can pass on the names

of the doctors that I've seen. Finally, although I haven't tried

them, there are nerve ?blocking? meds, like neurontin, that my

doctors have mentioned as an option to me. Good luck.

Donna and , I had cervical surgery 3 years ago.  I am already fused to S1 but really need 2 osteomies which I can't do because of heart issues.  The doctor who does limited revisions in the DC area - told me I had to have the cervical surgery before I could consider revision because of the way you are placed on the operating table.  My surgeon thought he would need to fuse but when he got in - he said the area was stable enough so he did decompression of 5 or 6 discs.  Like - the pain was surprising and mine was done from the back - not the front.  For me - it was pain in the area and it was intense for a week or so and then it went away.  I have been fine and have great mobility in my neck since the surgery.  The pain was not as bad as my big back surgeries but I was surprised by it.  When I had my last big back surgery - the intubation caused some kind of growth on my vocal cords.  I could not sing an octave and since I teach music - I had to get it taken care of.  I did have the respirator in for 3 days because I went into heart failure.  I had laser surgery on my vocal cords and I could not TALK for a whole week.  That has been fine ever since.  Ask your doctor about that - to see if the intubation did something. Valarie,of course it's a big deal especially considering everything

you've been through so far and knowing full well what you are facing

with revision surgery, not to mention I've seen first hand what people

go through after knee surgery God forbid you have to go through that

so you go right ahead and complain WE'LL LISTEN.........Donna ---

It sounds to me, , like you have

several good reasons to feel down and frustrated. Also what you’re saying

doesn’t sound like complaining to me; it sounds more like the pain of someone

who’s feeling overwhelmed by very real issues. I think it would be more unrealistic

to expect yourself to NOT be upset by your present situation.

I have to say I’ve always admired

the folks on this forum site who have let their hair down and vented about what’s

going on in their lives that is causing them pain. You are expressing honest

emotions, fears, upsets because you’ve got to let it out to someone and

most of the people on this forum have proved to be “safe” and

encouraging to those who are hurting.

I have not been that open with my own

stuff. I don’t know why. Just haven’t. So, , when you share info

surrounding your present situation, I think it’s very helpful. It allows

others to reach out and encourage you to help you get through this period. It

may not take away the problem, but it helps to know that people care about you

and want better for you. Also, when you share, it may encourage those of us (who

tend to keep things locked up a bit) to also be open and reach out.

I wish I could make it all go away for

you so you could get on with your plan. Please know that you are in my thoughts

and prayers.

Dear Kay,

Thank you so very much for your kind words. They actually

reduced me to tears and for many reasons. I have always been the sort

of person who could open up and express, but several things have

happened to me over the past couple of years that havemade me realize

that although I can be open, I am often also apologetic. And I have

no idea why. I wouldn't dream of boring you or others of the details

that have brought my attention to this, however when I was in the

hospital in July, my daughter tells me that all I did was continually

apologize to the nurses and anyone who helped me. She even told me

that during my first week home, I apologized profusely. I must on

some level feel uncomfortable relying on others or feel awkward or

uneasy having to depend on others. And this is all new to me! I am

just finding this out about myself. I am a nurturer, a caregiver and

I never realized that I am not so great about receiving.

So to have opened up, for whatever reason about myh fears and

frustration at what is happening and to get some positive feed back

from you and Donna and others is overwhelming. I think that perhaps I

need to be reassured that I am justified in how I feel and that

maybe, just maybe, I'm not being a big baby and that it is really OK

that I feel the way that I do. I guess at 47 years old, I have now

decided that it is time for me to take care of me and now that I

finally have, things are just not going according to the plan! And it

is alright to be pissed about it!! I know that I have to be careful

not to pity myself to long, and pull up my britches because evidently

I am in for a long haul, whether I want it or not! So here goes it!

And I am heart-warmed and so very proud to call all of you my dear

friends. And here come the tears again......

Valarie I feel your pain on so many levels. It is soo hard to have to

depend on others,it's been especially hard for me since I've been a

nurse for 22 years and am used to taking care of others! It's so very

helpful to have a place like this to vent to those who have been

through and are going through what we have. It's been really rough for

me as I am divorced and because I have been unable to work since May

2007 just prior to revision have lost everything and had to move in

with my parents. They have been so great as has the rest of my family

but god it's been hard having to depend on them and here I am facing

yet another surgery to make matters worse.I have been turned down

twice for social security disability and have now hired an attorney

for the hearing phase which he tells me can take up to 2 years to

even get on the docket!!I sometimes find myself worrying what would

happen to me if god forbid something happens to my parents in the

meantime as they are getting older and my mother is a breast cancer

survivor and recently had a bad mammogram on her remaining breast

which was biopsied and she will find out about on Wednesday. It's a

pretty helpless feeling when here I am scheduled for surgery October

6th and she may be needing me to take care of her instead of the

other way around.Luckily I have a sister and an aunt right around the

corner.Anyway I digress,I'm really glad I have you guys try to hang

in there we'll get through all of this somehow, hopefully you feel a

little better after hearing my sad story lol.......Donna

Thanks ! Can't wait to meet you next month at the NE get-

together. And speaking of that, someone had posed the question of

whether this was to be considered a late lunch or early dinner etc.

and I don't recall reading the answer (that may have during my

drugged days right after surgery!)?? Just wondering, as I am coming

to Boston with my daugher, my BFF and her niece. Just my daughter is

coming with me to meet all of you, but wanted to be able to let the

friend know if she should go off to dinner or what????
