Vegetarian before diagnosis?

Hello All,

Lately I've been noticing that a startlingly large number of celiacs that I have

talked to were (or are still) vegetarian before diagnosis. While I certainly

have no specific scientific evidence, I was just curious to take an informal

poll of people on this list.

I'll go first. I went vegetarian at age 8, stayed vegetarian until 23, and

started eating meat again. I then went vegan at age 28, and stayed vegan for

almost a year until my diagnosis. I stayed vegetarian for a while, and now I eat

meat (though I am very careful that my sources are free range, and if possible,

pasture raised.) It seems the more meat I eat, the more I want.

I was raised vegetarian and started eating meat at 37, about a year after I went gluten-free. I used to eat quite a bit of wheat and cheese, including several vegetarian meat substitutes with gluten as a primary ingredient. Unexpectedly, I've haven't had any problems digesting meat, even a hamburger or steak -- but I've had trouble digesting broccili and eggs (except in small amounts) for years. " Raw " meals, like at Cafe Gratitude, don't sit well with me either, except in small amounts. Eating meat is still often a strange and unfamilar experience to me -- but it has helped me understand what my kids must be feeling when we try and get them to eat new foods ;-)

My mother was vegetarian for 40 years until she found out she has celiac. Now she is on the specific carbohydrate diet and eats meat at every meal. Go figure! On Sat, Oct 10, 2009 at 10:05 AM, mandelicious <mandelicious@...> wrote:

I'm still veg-aquarian - veggies, fish, dairy, eggs - a year and a half after being diagnosed. I have no intention of ever eating meat or chicken again and there doesn't seem to be any reason to - my last biopsy and blood work showed vast improvement on the gf diet and I'm feeling soooo much better.

I was a vegetarian for 10 years, but then 1 year ago when I was diagnosed with

celiac, I was also diagnosed with dairy and egg allergies. Now I'm a vegan!

Well. I became vegan at 15, diagnosed with celiacs when I was 23. Last year (age 33) I developed a soy allergy and lost 15 pounds (was only 135 before) and started eating Glaum eggs and some cheese. Still can't bring myself to eat meat though...
