You need to rinse quinoa thoroughly before you cook it. If you're not washing it, that might be the reason you're having a reaction to it. Quinoa does NOT have gluten.

Hello Ruth,

I've always had problems with quinoa. It's supposed to be gluten-free, but I seem to react to it. Does anyone else have this problem?

Take care,

Diane

I'll just add that the quinoa at Trader Joe's says on the box that is it processed on equipment shared with wheat. On Sat, Feb 13, 2010 at 8:47 AM, on <eulaione@...> wrote:

The quinoa I eat is either Alter Eco Fair Trade or the Whole Foods 365 brand, and neither is noted has having been processed on equipment shared with wheat.

According to some research I’ve seen, a

lot of us with CD cannot tolerate other grains as well. They tend to give us “celiac

like” symptoms.

In fact, according to Dr. Greene,

20% of celiacs respond to even GF oats with “celiac like” symptoms.

You may just be one of those with CD that

are sensitive to other grains as well…

Just FYI, quinoa isn't actually a grain. The part we eat is a seed and the plant is related to leafy green vegetables like swiss chard, spinach, and beets. Just throwing this out there because a reaction to quinoa doesn't seem like it could have anything to do with celiac per se -- unless there's been cross contamination, of course, or unless one's distressed intestines have become overly sensitive to other food items...

Huh. Who knew?

(Well, obviously YOU did)…

All that freaking hype about it being an “alternative

grain”…
