Guest guest
I second ’s message.  When our daughter was diagnosed with Celiac we took her to Dr. and after spending almost $1,200 found they could not help us. They were just not set up to handle a complicated case of Celiac.  We found them to be good generalists but not able to apply specific solutions to Shana. We ended up seeing a Dr. Pierce (also a Chiropractic) but much more familiar with Celiac and a Dr. Song (MD w/holistic practice). Our Pediatric GI spoke with them and thought they were nuts.   They are taking a medical approach but do not have the infracture or expertise to support it.   Between Dr. Pierce and Dr. Song (and our Pediatric GI) we figured out Shana’s supplements along with regular blood work to determine how she was absorbing her nutrients along with stool and urine tests to determine what pre and pro biotics were needed. She is not thriving.   In the end we found Dr. to be a waste of time and money. From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of j. hogle Sent: Wednesday, February 24, 2010 8:47 PM ; danahoppe@... Guest guest
, Just to clarify, you are correct that the Drs are chiropractors but they have a medical doctor on staff. Also, when they lectured on their book/dvd they had a pediatrician present who supported their research as well as siting many medical journals for the basis of their information. I really feel that they have done their homework for this book. After being gluten free for 10 years I learned new information from listening to their lecture. That said, I am not linked to the 's in any way other than they diagnosed me years ago. I have been tested many times in various way since their diagnosis and my medical doctor agrees that I should be gluten free. I think it is important to have many sources of information when living gluten free. Guest guest
I'm new to this group, but not new to gluten sensitivity. I and my entire family are patients of the Drs. sen. They and the rest of the doctors there have been so beneficial to our health. In fact, my daughter was having dizzy spells that no one else could figure out, but they did. She hasn't had one spell since they worked with us. What I liked about them was that they really drilled down to the root of our individual problems. Something no other doctor had done before. I, in particular, had been very sick and didn't know why. I was diagnosed with gluten sensitivity elsewhere and put on tons of supplements and did get somewhat better, but not nearly back to normal. That's when I was introduced to HealthNOW, which is an integrated medical center. They do have MDs on staff. But, in my case, it was Dr. sen that was able to find major secondary problems that had been brought on by a lifetime of unknown gluten sensitivity. I was then able to solve those problems and get off all the supplements and I feel better than ever. My original doctor never considered secondary effects of gluten sensitivity. For me, DCs have helped me far more than general MDs or gastroenterologists. (Believe me; I went to several over two years before I got any relief.) From that experience, I've also come to learn that gluten sensitivity is not always the only issue. Finding and treating all the secondary issues that still make you feel sick takes time, and unfortunately, money. I can tell you, though, that I spent FAR less with HealthNOW finding the real causes of my problems than I did the previous two years trying to do things through MDs. I'm sorry your experience was different, and I'm glad you've found some good support now. But, I don't think one can make a blanket statement that just because someone isn't an MD that they aren't experts in their field. Again, my experience has been that the MDs have not been of help to me with my gluten sensitivity and secondary issues at all. For me, the DCs are the ones who solved the problem and helped me feel better than ever. As for their book, I was very impressed by the research that backs their book, and the impressive reviews. Dr. Liz Lipsky, author of Digestive Wellness supports their book. As does Dr. Mark Hyman, NY Times best-selling author. I think people should go wherever they get help. I recommend HealthNOW and the Drs. sen to everyone I know because I really believe in what they are doing. L > > I second ’s message. Guest guest
So, the s did well for you and not for Cara's daughter. The important thing for any of us to think about is who has the best, most appropriate expertise and information. Generally, for celiacs, the combination of your knowledgeable personal GP who knows you, a gastroenterologist, and nutritionist is the best bet. Those are the people at Kaiser who had the suspicion of, diagnosed, and strategized the resolution of CS problems in my wife. Did she want a DC or holistic alternative practitioners involved? No. Why? Because she, as I, are librarians who know and have taught online research, and we used our skills to acquire as much expert, peer-reviewed, quality information on the condition and its treatment as we could. My wife's CS is now controlled because of the Kaiser medical and nutritional experts we relied on. And, to be specific, my wife and I trust the not-for-profit, preventive-care-oriented Kaiser, NOT DCs, PhDs with irrelevant degrees, and those for-profit doctors who push gluten sensitivity as a source of all evil or, at least, a reason to buy their books and DVDs. Maybe the s are good for people with gluten "sensitivity," but, as Cara noted, I suspect that they don't do the endoscopies and biopsies often required for celiacs, provide the blood transfusions that my wife required for 10 months because of damage to villi in the small intestine, prescribe ProCrit for those whose marrow is not producing enough red cells because of the CS, and so much more. As Cara stated, "They were just not set up to handle a complicated case of Celiac." Guest guest
I can appreciate all the research that you must have done, as I spent two years researching my health issues on my own before finding the sens. Neither my GP nor my gastroenterologist mentioned the first thing about gluten sensitivity. (Though they were happy to run me through tons of expensive tests that turned up nothing.) So, in my case, the sens were invaluable. And, as I say, they have continued to help me with the very real secondary effects that can come with gluten sensitivity. If your route was different, that's fine. All I'm saying is that we should not underestimate or deface someone's expertise and ability to help people based solely on the notion that somehow their credentials lack credibility. I was literally at a different MD every two weeks for two years with no relief before the sens helped me. I just think it is short-sighted to dismiss them when I know they have helped me and others so much. Just for the record, the sens have never pushed me to buy their book or their DVD. Though, I do recommend them. The book is full of very credible references. And, the DVD is from their 2009 Forum in which Dr. Rodney Ford from New Zealand, a highly-regarded pediatric gastroenterologist, joined them to provide really important and useful information that I think anyone affected by gluten could benefit from: Especially those with children who are affected by gluten, like me. > > > > I second ’s message. In the end we found Dr. to be a waste of time and > money. > > >
