Guest guest
Hi – Unfortunately there isn’t a lot. Jia Tella’s (Cambodian) in s Valley has marked items that are ok. I don’t go out to eat a lot and always drive to SF for special occasions. Miyako (Japanese) in Capitola off 41st is good (haven’t had any problems) They prepare wheat free/gluten free stuff on separate cutting boards. Don’t order a roll with seaweed wrap…they’re seaweed has gluten. You can order rolls with soypaper wraps or just rice. They don’t have GF soy sauce/tamari so I bring my own. The 2 servers ive had (over a few times of going there) are very cautious/understanding, etc. they even do a miso soup sans the seaweed if you want it and can have soy. Beware of Dharma’s in Capitola. They advertise a “gluten free” menu including pizza, pasta etc. The only problem is the cook everything in the same ovens, etc, so cross contamination is a huge problem. I went in there with a group one time to get some salad and rice and saw the menu and got all excited. Then I asked the questions and got bummed out. They weren’t willing to talk to me about making these TRULY gluten free. My Thai Beach in Capitola (in the village) is good. I only order the curries and make sure they use clean pans. I’ve read all the bottles they use in the curries so I know what’s safe. Other than that I never go out to eat. I always buy stuff from Staff of Life, New Leaf or Whole Foods. I’ll splurge on an expensive item and equate it to the fact I would have spent that money if I went out to eat. I think some other SC people have had good experiences at Hula’s downtown. I haven’t been there since they first opened when I got glutened. I have heard practices have changed and staff is more knowledgeable, just hadn’t made it back. Good luck! We’re hoping the San and San Francisco gluten free places start popping up here soon! - From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Sent: Thursday, March 25, 2010 4:38 PM Subject: [ ] dinner in Santa Cruz Hi all, Some of you are quite the experts about Santa Cruz. Guest guest
, Thank you so much for the run-down, and especially about the places that might not be safe. This certainly makes it tricky. I'd like so much to be able to eat out, but safety is my main concern. I've been glutened too many times recently and it's a long climb back out of that hole! I've found that some regular high-class restaurants can be very accomodating and safe if they prepare a simple dish such as broiled fish (in its own pan, no sauce), baked or steamed potatoes, and steamed veggies - all in their own pans. I find I dont have problems with shared ovens if things are in their own containers. The grill is the most dangerous. Perhaps there is somewhere that can do the type of dinner I described above? Guest guest
Nell, Yes! It has been really good to me until this one time and I was really glutenized—I had all my original symptoms. During my meal I noticed rice pasta in my companion’s pasta dish….I started to wonder then. I have been there MANY times, and I have walked out healthy. I do intend to go back (they have been great!) and talk to the chef. If you go, just talk to the chef personally and tell him what is needed. And as you know, Sebastapudlians have little choice here. The other restaurant I go to here is El Coronel. I gave them the card explaining my needs (also in Spanish), and since then the owners and staff familiar with me make sure I am taken care of. Mexican restaurants are difficult, but I have the same meal each time. Guest guest
I've done that a few times at Stocken Bridge in Capitola village (salmon/salad/rice) once i got glutened and 3 times not...i hate to recommend somewhere that i did get glutened before. There's also Paradise Grill 2 doors down that is a nicer palce that might work and around the corner is Blue Water Steak house. The Shadowbrook is high end and has great ambiance along the river (it's hidden) and Cafe Cruz in Capitola is supposed to be nice too. Downtown is Soif (a wine bar that serves nice cusine) that could be a good choice. Mobo is also downtown. It's a Japenese restaurant and they have gluten free tamari. I've never braved any restaurant on the wharf besides the wine bar Vino Primo (not for food) so not sure if there's something there. I dont eat corn, so i dont have any input on Mexican cusine. Hope your able to safely have a good time! Guest guest
In addition to Vasallis, I've dined successfully at Sawasdee in Soquel. There are lots of lunchy things that can be picked up at Staff of Life (they have a place to eat-in), Whole Foods and New Leaf markets. Whole Foods to Staff of Life is a short walk.
