Guest guest
Thanks Chrissy! I'm using cow milk. I've only found goat milk a few places, and it's quite expensive and it's pasteurized. I will be checking at various local farms in the near future, but for now, store- bought (pasteurized/homogenized) cow milk will have to do. Raw milk isn't easily available in Michigan. I just ordered some Water Kefir Grains, so I'm looking forward to starting those when they arrive, as well. in MI On May 28, 2008, at 10:44 PM, Chrissy wrote: > MMm sounds delicious! are you using cow milk or goat milk? > > On Wed, May 28, 2008 at 10:32 PM, Nasers <mishlnaz@... > > > wrote: > > > I am, at this moment, enjoying my very first homemade-kefir > smoothie, > > and it's fab! > > > > 3/4 kefir > > 1/4 cup frozen organic wild blueberries > > 3/4 cup frozen organic strawberries > > 1 teaspoon vanilla > > 1 tablespoon organic honey > > > > Throw it all in a blender and whip it up. > > > > in MI > > > > > > -- > " I love deadlines. Guest guest
I use cow milk too. I have no idea where to get fresh goat milk and I haven't heard that great of things about the store bought I'm interested in trying the water kefir as well. I love the milk kefir. Do you know if water kefir is also a 24 hour fermentation process? Are they the same type of grains as milk grains and are they interchangeable? I'm curious. Guest guest
My understanding is that you CAN convert milk grains to water grains, but they don't grow, like they do when you are giving them milk. There are different water grains (which is what I ordered) that do grow and it sounds like there are tons of different ways to make, and serve, water kefir. I'm not sure, yet, of the process for water kefir, but my grains will come with instructions, so I'll know what to do for basic water kefir. I'll report in and let you know how I do with it. Guest guest
Yes do I'm becoming more interested in water-kefir because not everyone in my family is crazy about the milk kefir right off the bat. Marilyn, if you're reading, can you shed a little light on the topic of milk-to-water grains? What is the difference between them and the water grains you offer? I appreciate the info! Guest guest
What kinds of things do you like to put in your smoothies? I dont want my smoothies to get too sugary with added fruit juices and such. So far I use fresh or frozen fruit.. I've tried also avocado with mango and fage yogurt... Also tried adding spinach (which is yummy). I also use hemp fiber powder. Any suggestions would be great! Esp tips for adding veggies into a smoothie without it tasting like tomato juice. Guest guest
I think that spinach and dairy products counteract each other in terms of calcium and iron. I'm going by memory here, and I don't have time to look it up right now. Even if that's true, if you like the combination, go for it -- as long as the smoothies aren't your primary source for these two nutrients. Also tried adding spinach (which is yummy). Guest guest
I love spinach in smoothies, and I always use vanilla soy milk in my smoothies for the kids. (I never heard anything about spinach and dairy - there is so much I don't know!) We made them for St 's Day and called them Leprechaun Smoothies. I like to put frozen mango chunks and bananas with spinach. Sometimes I add ground flax, but nothing else. The bananas make it a nice thick texture so it feels like we are eating milkshakes. Guest guest
My neighbor from whom I got my first grains always keeps her Kefir in the refrigerator. I did that at first and still have one bottle that lives in the frig and one bottle that lives on the counter. Both grow and ferment, they just do it at different rates (frig one takes a few days). Both taste and act the same. Lee Anne - > > As to whether cold or ice will hurt/diminish the benefits of the kefir, I sure hope not. I doubt it. But we know that putting your " grains " in the refrigerator will slow them down a little after they are returned to room temperature. > > > > I await other people's opinions and ideas. > > > > > > > > > >
