Cross contamination (field, transport, and processing) can be a

possibility with quinoa.  However, some seeds do cause irritation for some

celiacs, including mustard seed (and rape seed which is used to make canola

oil) and fennel.  These seeds do not contain gluten, but can be a problem for

some celiacs due to those seeds being hard to digest or having components that

can irritate the digestive tract, especially one recovering from celiac

disease.  Many celiacs tolerate these seeds with no problem, but for some the

reaction can be similar to ingesting gluten.

Just FYI, quinoa isn't actually a

grain. The part we eat is a seed and the plant is related to leafy green

vegetables like swiss chard, spinach, and beets. Just throwing this out there

because a reaction to quinoa doesn't seem like it could have anything to do

with celiac per se -- unless there's been cross contamination, of course,

or unless one's distressed intestines have become overly sensitive to other

food items...
