Since February 15 I have consequently been gluten free and feel significantly better (no stomach cramps, no bloating, more energy). Now my doctor wants me to do an endoscopy to make sure that I have celiac disease. But I would have to eat gluten again for any symptoms to show up. How important is the endoscopy? Would it just show that I have celiac or also to what degree? Also, how important is it to be dairy free? Thanks so much for your help. My daughter has DH and has been gf for almost four months. We saw an allergist yesterday, who mentioned doing a gluten challenge so we could definitively diagnose. (The pediatric dermatologist at Lucile Packard said it was DH but didn't do a skin biopsy.) We told him that we had been told be another doctor that a gluten challenge could actually trigger other autoimmune issues and we weren't willing to do it. He was totally ok with this. He did recommend a genetic test. If anyone has info about that, I'd love to hear back. Guest guest Posted May 7, 2010 Report Share Posted May 7, 2010 Whether you do a gluten challenge really depends on how important it is to you to have a diagnosis. I did a gluten challenge a bit more than a year ago after having gone gluten free on my own more than a year earlier. I had 3 - 4 slices of bread a day for 5 weeks. I was so sick I could barely function, and my biopsy was still negative. I have since been to the celiac clinic at Stanford and learned that the doctor I had gone to only took one biopsy. The celiac clinic recommends at least 6 biopsies, since this is a very patchy disease; and they like them taken and prepared a particular way to facilitate seeing even minor damage. They indicated that many general GI docs miss seeing damage that celiac specialists would recognize. (After all that, they said that based on symptoms and genetics, they are a sure as they can be without doing another challenge that I have celiac.) In response to Debbie's comments about a gluten challenge triggering other autoimmune issues, I had not heard that until after I did the gluten challenge. All of my pre-existing autoimmune issues flared up worse than ever before while I was doing the challenge. They have improved, but I have not returned to feeling as well as I did before the gluten challenge. Finally, with respect to dairy, every person is different. Some people are not able to tolerate it short term, then are fine once their intestines heal. Others stay off dairy long term. Try cutting dairy for a week or two and then re-introduce it.
