Grain fed Meat? /Now Milk

Actually, when I noticed many years ago that sometimes milk

seemed to cause a celiac reaction in my son and other times not, I investigated

what the cows in the dairy whose milk I bought were fed. After much

persistent calling, I spoke to the person in charge of what the cows were

fed. I found that while these cows were not fed wheat, they were

sometimes fed a grain mash that included barley. They were fed different

things on different days. This explained why the reaction to milk was

inconsistent. Since then, we have avoided whole milk. We

don’t seem to have any problem with ice cream, cream (I think because so

little of the protein is in these products), cheese, or yogurt (I think because

the proteins are changed by enzymes in processing). This seems to work

well for us. We have never had a problem with meat (plain, unseasoned

meat, that is).

While I have never seen any tests of cow’s milk for

gluten, the evidence of my observation of my child’s reaction plus the

results of my investigation into the feeding of dairy cows was all I needed to

make a decision for my family. Each celiac must make a decision they are

comfortable with as to their tolerance of milk.

Perhaps if enough celiacs raise the issue, research will follow

with testing of cows’ milk, and who knows, maybe producers will follow

with milk from gluten-free cows.

First, cows are very seldom fed gluten containing

grain. Corn, maybe, corn silage certainly, alfalfa and other hay, sure,

but almost never wheat, barley, or rye. So, milk is listed as gluten

If you find something that shows cow milk having been tested and found to

contain gluten, please post it. It could explain a lot if that's the

case.
