My family and I will be going to be DC for a week in June - any advice about eating well there would be welcome. We don't need specifically kid-friendly places. Thanks! Tristan

I was there for work a year and a half ago and stayed in the

Capitol Hill area…below is the email I saved from (a member of

this group) who recommended everything for me.

I ate at Jaleo and Zaytinya. Jaleo was good, but Zaytinya

was delicious!

-

DC is great for gluten-free. Try Jaleo for

tapas. http://www.jaleo.com/downtown.htm

Last time I was there, in April, they had gluten free items

marked on the menu. It was the best food I had had in a long time. I even

had grilled squid in a tasty inky sauce. They are in the Chinatown area

which is downtown on the red line near the Mall. I think they call it Penn

Quarter.

Austin Grill is great too. It's one of the more

affordable options. They actually have a gluten free menu and very tasty

tacos.

Zaytinya is a trendy, popular and tasty restaurant that has

a lot of naturally gluten-free items. I dont rememebr if they had a gluten free

menu or if they just had a list of items on their menu that are

safe. The staff were quite knowledgeable. I had a great dinner

there. http://www.zaytinya.com/

If you have a lot of money to spend, try Oceanaire

restaurant. I went there for a business lunch and was blown away by the food

and the attentiveness and knowledge of the staff. This is the reason I

won't go to Legal Seafoods in DC. They even made broccoli taste delicious

- with no sauce. Everything was perfect. I don't remember the name

of the fish I got but it was fresh and recomended - and flown in from

Alaska. They do not have a gluten-free menu but can easily prepare items

that are safe for you and to your request. Apologies for the

music on the website. http://www.theoceanaire.com/Location/Default.aspx?id=2

There are also the old stand-bys of PF Changs and Legal

Seafood - although I don't recomend Legal's in DC. Last time I was at the Legal

Sea Food in DC my fish was dry, the broccoli was overcooked and the rice was

dry. It is much better in boston.

Happy travels! DC is great.

Hi Tristan,

Because we were planning to go to DC ourselves this year (but decided to

postpone the trip until next year, I did some research that I would be happy to

share with you about places to eat in the DC area:

Fogo de Chao (Brazilian w/GF bread)

Pete's New Haven Style APizza

Wagamama

Firefly

Austin Grill

Original Pancake House

Zengo

Argia's

Ella's Woodfired Pizza in the Metro Center

Legal Seafoods

Whole Foods is there too.

There is also a PF Chang's 5 miles away in Arlington. Bethesda, land has a

lot of places to eat GF including Mama Lucia (GF Pizza) & Lilit Cafe.

Best,

Don't forget Jaleo for tapas - really good, and they introduced a gluten free menu a while back.

Also, I had luck at Zaytinya http://www.zaytinya.com/ they have delicious mediteranean style food and had a listing of what was gluten free.

I really miss both those places!

Best,
