Guest guest
, for bruises (contusions) remember the word RICE - Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. Also take off all jewellery on that hand or arm. A bruise usually takes a week to two weeks to heal. If you feel something is strained or sprained, sorry to say it but you should go to the hospital to have it properly bandaged and immobilized. If you don't know how to apply compression and elevation, it is best to look it up on a good medical site on the internet. Medline is sponsered by the U.S. government (NIH), they have the best advice, also the NIH has a service called Publimed, which is the best site for current, reliable medical research. Guest guest
Hi, , Ice, for the first 24 hours, and then heat. Those are the recommended treatments by physicians and they work! From another clumsy person - Pat
Guest guest
Do you have normal range of motion in your shoulder? Can you raise your arm? The last time I had a fall I fractured my shoulder and partially tore the rotator cuff. Perhaps you should go to the ER and get x-rays. We were at a horse show so I put off dealing with it until I got home but I was miserable. Hope its nothing serious. I was out in the snow this morning. I don't go out a lot in the snow. It was lousy. I even had to climb into our 4 wheel drive truck that is way off the ground. I'm in Michigan. Weather has not been good lately. Kay fall Today my graceful self decided to take a tumble in the snow. Now I normally would just bite the bullet and tough it out, but I have a 1300 mile drive to make this week and need to get this arm in shape as fast as possible. Normally I would rest it for a while and then begin gentle range of motion exercises. Since I have sort of a rush up job here I wanted to ask our collective 'experts' on these sorts of things the best and fastest way to deal with this thing. Ideas, please?? I'd be pleased to hear from anyone on or off the board. /MI ------------------------------------------------- Post message: Unsubscribe from any of the RISG.ORG forums: http://www.risg.org/infosupp/risgorg_unsubscribe.htm<http://www.risg.org/infosup\ p/risgorg_unsubscribe.htm> You can set your subscription to digest (one email a day) by going to /</> Your contribution to RISG.ORG is tax deductible. Guest guest
I'm in MI also-- the UP near MT.I don't usually have any troubles with the snow--it's the ice I avoid like the plague. This time I had shoveled the walk and next door neighbors put their snow into my walk and parked their car so I couldn't pout mine where I usually do. I used an alternate parking place and had no handrail. Down I went. I thought I'd fallen and couldn't get up. : ( The only thing I can't do is raise my arm level out to the side, but I wasn't doing that too well before the fall. Of course, it seems we always fall on our weakest spot. Nothin gagonizing here but I'm not looking forwar to a nice long drive with it the way it is. What did you have to do for a partially torn rotator cuff? IF it involves PT, I ought to wait till I get back to GA where I'll be spending most of my time the next few weeks, dealing with Dad's estate. To get started wit PT here would be a waste anyway. I'm not in agony so I'll just wait. A few days won't amke a major difference I don;t think. If I get in AWFUL pain I'll have to make another decision. Thanks for your input. Guest guest
Hi , I didn't realize (or maybe just forgot) that you are in the UP. That's the Upper Peninsula for those of you less familiar with Michigan. In Michigan talk, that makes a " uper " . When I broke my shoulder I couldn't lift it hardly at all. I actually lost the use of my left arm for a year. I regained use only through surgery and PT. I would ice it for now like others have recommended. I actually fell with my arm over my head landing on my armpit. I was pulled off the trailer steps by one of our dogs. The important thing is to keep moving your arm. People with arthritis are prone to frozen shoulders. You should talk to your neighbors about the snow problem. They should not be creating extra work for you. Tell them that you need to park near the handrail. Kay Braddock Speedway German Wirehaired Pointers Paint Horses
Guest guest
My arm is not as serious as yours but thanks for thinking of me. I sort of fell the same way you did as I was reaching for a banister at the top of the steps to keep from going down. Actually the UP has bastardized(hope that word isn't offensivehere as it is a word that describes a process by which things are made more diminutive) the name to 'Yooper " which is written like it sounds now. Quite an interesting bunch of ppl here. They are quiet and hard working but have a monstrous sense of humor for the ones I've met. The ones of us who learn the area at all are either of the same humor bent or that's what it takes to stay here or something. With all of the snow and howling and growling out tonight (HUGE white out storm)an ice bag would KILL me I'm positive. I'll report in later. I think I just pulled soemthing and the shoulder was whining anyway. Both shoulders ahve been frozen for years. When I moived I lost my band for PT For the exercises for the situation. I had been compensating for the PT by doing range of motion till dad was sick and died. Some how that fell by the wayside with all of the rest that was going on. I'll gradully get back to it now, I'm positive. /MI( the Yooper)
Guest guest
Hi , I didn't know how to spell " yooper " , I just knew how it sounded. The UP is beautiful place to live but only for the hardy! It is one of my favorite places to travel (in the summer). Have you seen Jeff 's movie, Escanaba in da Moonlight " ? We are watching it tonight. Do you ever feel it is isolating living in the UP? My husband and I have discussed moving North when he retires but I'm afraid I would miss my kids to much living so far away. Georgia will be a nice break for you from the winter weather. Have a safe trip. Kay Braddock Speedway German Wirehaired Pointers Paint Horses

Guest guest
I'm so jealous of all of you in fall weather. This is our first week under 100 since May I think. So I guess that means our temps 'dropped' too. (tee hee) Deb M. Sadly sweating it out in sweltering Phoenix instead of enjoying fun cool weather where her better mindset helps her cope with pain . . . :-) > Kam > I know what you mean about the temp. Guest guest
You poor gals. I'm thrilled with the Indian summer weather we've been having, but here that means low 80's. Guest guest
I was carrying the bedding from the dryer to the bedroom and didn't see the vacuum. I stubbed my big toe on the power nozzle (it's a canister vac) and tripped. I landed on my butt straddling the canister. I managed to hang on to the laundry though! If someone had walked into the kitchen I would have just looked like I decided to sit on the vacuum for a spell. I yelled for Tori to come help me get up - she couldn't tell I had fallen. My big toe is throbbing, swollen and has turned all shades of black and purple. I may decide to go get a shoe/boot tomorrow for protection if my sandals aren't enough. I need to tape the toes together but then I wouldn't be able to wear my sandals because they have the piece that goes between the toes. Words of Wisdom for revisees: WATCH WHERE YOU ARE WALKING!!! Guest guest
Peggy, Ouch. Sorry to hear of your fall....but glad you kept the clean laundry off the floor! I hope that no lasting harm comes to your toes. I imagine you will suffer for awhile and then you will be good as new. At least nothing happened to compromise your back.
