Guest guest
The benefit from alcohol has been determined to extend beyond just wine so it isn't just the grape anti-oxidants. The dominant mechanism appears to be that consumption of alcohol raises HDL. In general more HDL is good. Whether the benefit of moderate alcohol use extends to CRONies may depend upon the individuals lipid profile, need for protection from heart disease, and sensitivity to alcohol's negative effects. I'm not aware of any studies shedding light on this question. My guess is that the benefit would be reduced. If our risk is already reduced will oneor two drinks a day make our risks even lower? BTW for teetollers andnon-drinkers (or those who just don't want to add extra calories fromalcohol) I remember reading that red grapes confer the same benefits aswine. Actually I eat grapes AND have about a glass of wine a day.on 1/20/2003 10:46 AM, Kyberneticist at kyberneticist@... wrote:> > --- Francesca Skelton <fskelton@...> wrote:>> > http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A30481-2003Jan8.html> > Well, no one responded to this, but I thought it was> really interesting. Guest guest
I think we're mixing up the advantage of ethanol for heart disease versus the phenols for cancer. NOT drinking ANY ethanol is a risk factor for heart disease. regards. ----- Original Message ----- From: Francesca Skelton Sent: Monday, January 20, 2003 10:30 AM Subject: Re: [ ] moderate alcohol intake cuts risk of heartdisease I think the jury's still out on whether it's any alcohol or not (although Idid see the recent article linking ANY kind of alcoholic beverage tobenefits).
